    Fellow bean counters!

As a tax guy with dreams of being a CFO someday, I’ve always had the intention of lateraling into audit at some point for a broader accounting experience.

I’m now wondering when would be the best time to make that switch, and more importantly, how to ask without pissing off anybody in the tax practice (the last thing I want is to be black listed / fired!!)

    Thanks everyone!

I'd say as soon as possible. The more experience you get in tax the harder it will be for them to let you go. Maybe you can ask about working in audit during a slower part of the tax year? I know the firm I came from, large regional ~60 employees, there weren't many people that would go back and forth. As a staff auditor you could volunteer to work in tax during tax season (Feb-April) and as a tax staff you could volunteer to work in audit during the audit busy season. Once you got to 2-3 years you were relegated to one or the other. If you work at a small practice it is more likely that you'll get to do both and be expected to do both.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

@Mark, I really don't have advice for a lateral move, but I think you might consider looking at firms that give people experience in both fields. Usually they're a bit smaller, but the experience can always land you a full audit position somewhere along the road.
