How much can one have missed by graduating with a master of science in taxation at 31 and passing the last CPA exam at 32?

Missed all chances to make it in Big 4?

Missed all chances to potentially make 6-figure income?

Missed all chances to earn valuable experience?

Or is it all just self-pity?

Are you or do you know anybody getting certified in their 30s? Please share your experience!

I'm with those guys. 34 with an MBA and hopefully CPA this year, working in industry. I manage an accounting department and will be able to get a Controller position after I get the CPA, then who knows…CFO, VP of something. Right now I'm just focusing on finishing this thing before my oldest starts kindergarten in August so I can be involved in all my kids education and after school activities. I wouldn't be mad at a 6 figure salary, but I am not going to miss out on everything just to achieve it. I've done that while trying to get the CPA, but my kids are young. Point is that you are the one that controls where you go from here. You have the credentials to go places and 32 is the new 22 anyways. 🙂

Amen @Mommy! I feel better at 34 (almost 35) than I did at 24! Okay, that may be a lie. At 24, I didn't have any kids. 🙂

BUT, the point is, 32 is still very young and you still have a lot of years to work and do the things you want to do. Accomplish those goals! I didn't even want to be a CPA until 2 years ago! Then, my husband had 3 surgeries over an 8 month span and I was 6 accounting hours short, so here we are now. 🙂 It's never too late if it's something you really want.

    FAR 82
    REG 76
    BEC 71, 78 (There is a light!!!)
    AUD 69, 83 (DONE!!!!)

Casagarber, you took the exams in my same order and I'm also going to take my last BEC exam in the end of May! Good luck! And thank you all for cheering me up! I am not really planning to do whatever I can to get to six figures. I just think I reached the critical point of this journey when I feel like I'm missing out of having a life because of the CPA, and I have little devils on my shoulders telling me I could enjoy life instead of studying… I need to focus on this last exam and if I pass it,this nightmare will finally be over. Only 16 days to go!

I am 32 years old and hadn't really thought seriously about taking the exam until last August. I have been a Staff Accountant for the past 10 years in industry (uggg) and got my MBA in June, 2012, so I didn't meet the 150 credit hour requirement until then. I got motivated to take the exam after feeling like I didn't qualify for so many jobs without it. I really want to get into public accounting at a regional firm in my area (no Big 4 where I live) and will start sending out resumes at the end of the month. I currently work at a large, private University and the pay is AWFUL, so I really wouldn't have to take much of a pay cut to start in public. So, I guess I will be finding out soon enough if I missed out on the chance to work in public by not doing it right after undergrad.

    FAR 12/3/14, 87
    AUD 2/3/14, 90
    BEC 4/1/14, 88
    REG 5/27/14, 94

I'm in this group too. I don't care about big 4. I just landed my first job ever at a small (rural) tax firm. I couldn't be happier (and a little nervous since I start work on Monday). I got here because I went after what I decided I wanted and didn't quit.

There are plenty of us getting certified and doing many ‘firsts' after age of 30. Set your goals and go after it!
