Own Business

Curiosity question … has anyone out there started their own biz on the side while being employed full time?

I work full time for a large corporation … and since I’m now a CPA, I just registered and created my own business, so I can do some tax work on the side, (on my own time of course – I’ve checked the code of conduct, and it’s permissible.)

Just wondering if anyone has done this, and if so, how it worked out for you. My goal is to monitor my intake of clients so I won’t be over my head … and just “see how it goes” … and re-evaluate everything in a year, 2 or 3 …

    Thoughts?

    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

In addition to my full time job in industry I have my own business on the side but not accounting related. I sell motorcycle leather on my own website and on Amazon and help my hubby run his gunsmithing business. I am also a certified Sage 50 consultant and occasionally get a client with that but not enough to make it a full time business, I think since I work in industry and don't have any experience in public that it would be harder for me to get that off the ground.

I have begun starting to do the same thing. I started my biz at the end of December and with little advertising I got a handful of tax clients at the beginning of tax season, but I have been trying to hook a few bookkeeping/small biz accounting gigs, but have had no luck so far.

I have run my own business for 17 years. I have more tax clients than bookkeeping. It has been really tough getting the small businesses to realize how important monthly bookkeeping is to the business. Running a business take a lot of time and money. Don't quit your day job until you are established.

It's also tough without a license.

I do have my license … and in no way would I ever quit my day job. It's too good. Just wanted to start my own biz, and see where it takes me, and if I could quit the day job in 3,5,7 years, so be it. If not, I'm still in good hands.

I meant for me….not having a license. Having a business is a great adventure….take it on.

@tncincy – Do you have any business tax clients? Do you do much in the off season, like handle extensions, etc.?

I have about 20 extensions, most of them are real estate owners. I have business tax clients, but they generally do their own bookkeeping or their own version anyway. I like what I do, but the license might make it a little more than lucrative than tax. The tax industry has changed to where individuals can do their taxes online. I am very limited without a license.

I have been researching this as well and would like to start something up for next year. There are lots of threads on this and other material online. Some things I've been looking at are software, insurance and PTIN. Also, I've been looking at getting efile set up. I've set a goal to get x number of clients for next year. This way, I will cover my costs and make a little extra cash. Going to start with simple returns and progress from there. Like you, just want to see where it takes me. Not quitting my day job anytime soon.
