Outsourcing Taking our Jobs?

    Hi,

I work for a public accounting firm in Florida in the Tax department. When I interned I worked 60+ hours a week and they had just started outsourcing work. This busy season I am working about 40 hours a week and it seems like we are sending a lot of our work overseas. I am starting to feel like I am training my replacement and I am uncomfortable asking any of my superiors about it. All I can say is I am not the only associate who feels this way. A lot of us are starting to worry. Should I be looking for a new job / switching to audit?

    Thanks,

    UD

Just wait for Trump to get into office, he'll put a sizable tax on overseas outsourcing which will end that in a hurry.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm a bit more cautious than others, but if I were you I'd be looking for another job. Maybe don't leave during busy season, but if I were you I'd update my resume and quietly test the waters to see what your options are. I think it says a lot too that your superiors aren't being open about what is going on. If they cared about keeping their people, they should say “I'm sure you noticed we have outsourced x to x but we are only doing it for reasons x y and z..”.

I really do enjoy working where I am though. Let me rephrase, the superiors are approachable, I just am not sure how appropriate it would be to discuss the topic. Any idea's on what I should say?

you can always ask for a sit down to discuss your career goals and future with company. take the opportunity to tell them how much you enjoy working there and express your interest in audit if your current firm can provide you with an audit opportunity. letting your mgmt know you are ambitious and expressing curiosity about where you fit beyond the short term may open up the conversation enough to know your next move.
it is troubling to hear that these jobs will go because they take a lot of sensitive information with them.

It's the same dilemma in any job in any function in any industry…

As an employee, if a company can replace your skills far cheaper and more efficient, shouldn't they do so? In order to stay relevant, you have to move into functions which are more complex or require more than just filling out forms which, to your point, can be outsourced abroad (or even to temp staff, interns, etc.).

My big 4 firm outsources lots of work to India for the compliance grunt work. Just the direction things are going, I wouldn't stress much. Our local teams review to returns and add plenty of value there so it shouldn't be a big job threat yet.

Our children, however, are a different story…

Don't worry about it. You will graduate to more complex work. Tax isn't just prepping returns. Like PublicGuy said, they're are plenty of other ways to add value. Working 40 hrs a week in busy season sounds awsome. I'm assuming your on salary?

Are you Trump people serious? You know the president can't do a lot of the stuff any of these candidates are claiming they're going to “fix”. Especially complex tax reform and setting international tariffs.

2nd paragraph of what DoOver said x1,000. Honestly, this is why voting and politics becomes less and less enjoyable for me because these candidates, even if elected, will never ever get the opportunity to implement or fix even half of what they talk about. I think SMART people realize this… I mean look how long it took Obama care to go into effect? And then the penalty for not being insured? Exactly how is the IRS going to audit that? I actually told someone not to vote if they believed Ted Cruz would be able to abolish the IRS. This doesn't even take into account if Congress is made up by the same party that the President represents. Recently, one party would have Congress while the other party was represented by the President thus leading to all these stand offs and pretty much incapable of getting anything done.

    Sorry to hijack the thread.
