This is my third tax season, and I believe, the third time I have gotten a cold in the last 2 weeks before the deadline. Does this tend to happen to anyone else? Also what do you do when you start to feel sick? I immediately start taking mucinex sudafed and airborne. I find that often I don’t get too sick if I start this as soon as I start to feel it. Still this is literally the worst time of year. Even if I need it, I can’t take any time off work.

If it always seems to happen at the same week, have you considered allergies?

1st – IF you are truly sick – make your best effort to get your work and remote in from home if possible.

There is nothing worse than the people who come into our office during busy season with a whole drug store sitting on their desk couging and sneezing all over the place and then infect everyone else. 1 person being less productive is a lot better than everyone getting sick this close to the deadline.

2nd – It's that time of year where flu and other sicknesses are all over the place plus you cramed with other people for long periods of time with close contact. Dont forget to wash your hands before eating. While people at your office may not be sick, there are tons of clients whose documentation your hands may be all over that are.

Watch what you eat – its a lot easier to eat junk food, soda, fast food etc. during tax season make sure you are getting the vitamins you need – take a supplement if need be. I take multivitamins all during tax season and drink nothing but water and have survived 4 without illness (KNOCK ON WOOD!)

I figured it was just from the stress wearing down on me. I guess I'm alone in this. It's definitely not allergies, I have a cat this year, so I have been taking flonase for about a month. Several people have been sick in my office, so I assume that is where I got it. Anyway hopefully it won't get too bad.

Keep experimenting with different OTC medicine till you find what works best for you, and it may change from one cold to another. If I'm stuffy, it completely turns my brain off, so there's times I'll get 5 or 6 different cold/flu medicines during the same cold trying to find the one that will fix my worst symptoms and let me work. 😐

I only worked one year in taxes, but I think I did get sick near the end of the season.

Dealing with something similar over here, though I genuinely can't tell if it's allergies or a cold most of the time. If I get a cold I usually know it though, so I'm banking on allergies, but you make a good point about the stress factor. It hasn't been too stressful here, but I'm sure the lack of sleep isn't doing me any favors….

Stress can do real damage to your immune system. My first year I had shingles, and the next was walking pneumonia. I also had the flu last year. Before public accounting, I had a record of only getting sick about once a year, and it was always very mild. Now, I feel like my record is an average of 4 times a year.
