OT: Should I look for a new job?

So I changed jobs 4-5 months ago because I was not given any chance to move up or take more responsibilities. I took my same position at another company because of all the opportunity they said there was to move up in there firm and thought it was only a matter of time until my experience would pay off. Well the job I really want (and am qualified for) opened up 4 months in and I applied. There is a 6 month rule at this company but there are exceptions if you are switching job in the same department, which I am. Now my boss is telling me that it would be beneficial for me to at least stay the 6 months and maybe a year because of the valuable experience which would further my career, and it seems as though I am being prevented from interviewing for this position. I can only imagine that it will be a long time before another position like this opens up, and I think they just don’t want me to leave their department, what should I do? Advice?

I'd stay put, it's only been a few months and i wouldn't necessarily expect to move that quickly. Besides, having a resume that “looks” like you're job-hopping doesn't exactly lend itself to promotable positions.

@mIa – Even within the same company?

No I meant if OP starts to look elsewhere for a job after 5 months. Within the same company always looks GOOD, means you impressed someone!!

I think the OP just wants to transfer divisions. They should be allowed to interview for that, right?

I misunderstood, thought op was asking if she/he should apply to other companies since the boss is discouraging from going for this job. Think it warrants discussing how it would be more beneficial and then weigh the options.

@mla1169 – you are correct. Wondering if he should look elsewhere being frustrated that this company seems to be holding him back, or wait it out and hope that another opportunity for the same type of position will eventually open up again in the same company. Afraid it may be awhile before the same type of opportunity presents itself.

I would be concerned about the “job-hopping” on the resume too.

When people hire you they typically expect at least a year out of you, regardless of what they say on paper. 6 months? Yah ok, that's a friggin joke.

It is ok to leave, but this time get a promotion. I made a lateral move, and looking back it was more like a step down. If something isn't a step up, it is a step down – Trump. Ok he didn't say that, but it is something he would say.
