Anybody have a good resource for a “just the facts” type understanding of the healthcare reform laws?

Given that parts of it are administered through the tax code (penalties/credits to business and individuals who don’t meet the requirements), our clients anticipate that we know a lot about the topic…and that is great, since it shows a lot of trust, but my office is feeling like our knowledge is a bit below our clients’ expectations…! So, does anyone know of good resources for learning about the effects of these changes, specifically on the taxes, but also somewhat on the requirements for businesses? Whether it’s book, seminars, webinars, CPE providers, etc., we’re just looking for some good resources and I thought that this community might have some ideas!

Are you a part of your state CPA society? My office is going to a seminar next week put on by CalCPA. I also received a booklet explaining the insurance side of things, from our insurance company(also through CalCPA). Maybe your state society has some resources?

None of us are CPAs (yet). My boss never wanted to be, and I'm still a couple tests away. 😐 I might look into it, though, and see if our state society would offer provisional membership for a soon-to-be CPA… Good idea, though, I'll check into what they offer.

I am a member as a candidate in my state. It's way cheaper than if you were licensed, so do look into it. For CA you can be a candidate member for 5 years, then it kicks up to “professional”. Are you in private? Do you have an outside CPA?

We're actually in public accounting. Crazy, I know, to be comprised of only non-CPAs in a public practice… My boss bought this practice in partnership with a CPA way back in the day, and then they ended their partnership, and my boss has proceeded without a CPA. Thankfully in KY, you don't have to work directly for a CPA, just have to have a CPA sign off on it…so I'll ask the old partner to sign off, since he knows my boss enough to be comfortable that I've been learning. And then I'll be the only CPA in the firm!

The IRS just created a web page about it. Its URL is https://www.irs.gov/uac/Affordable-Care-Act-Tax-Provisions-Home

    REG - 11/5/2012 - 80
    BEC - 1/17/2013 - 76
    AUD - 2/22/2013 - 70 4/5/2013 - 75
    FAR - 5/28/2013 - 75 - Done!!!

Question: What do you call someone who only gets 75's and 76's on the four parts of the CPA exam?

    Answer: A CPA
