My accounting career has been interesting…
1. While in school and during a recruiting event, a classmate and I were talking to an accounting professional about their firm. Suddenly my classmate leans toward the trashcan on the floor and throws up inside. She then straightens herself, wipes her mouth, and continues with the conversation as if nothing happened…while me and the accounting professional just stared at her wide-eyed.
2. During my first busy season, I was driving home at 4AM when the freeway came to a complete stop. There were lights, police car barracades, ambulances, firetrucks, and two cars on fire. After sitting there for 15 minutes completely frustrated because I would barely have enough time to get a few hours sleep before I have to wake up and go pick up Starbucks for the entire team before 9AM (I was a first year), a light-bulb went off in my head. I turned off my car, locked my doors, put my seat down, and went to sleep. I can't remember how long I slept. But a police officer came tapping on the car windows (not just mine) when the freeway was finally cleared.
3. My team was in the throes of a challenging Q1 reivew and pulling OT like crazy. To add to the load, our team was also being reviewed by the PCAOB. I stayed at work until 2 or 3AM one day. When I left the office, there was a huge detour on the freeways with tons of traffic. A hour and half later in bumper to bumper traffic and being directed and rerouted by traffic cops into and out of unfamiliar neighborhoods, I realized I was re-routed in a huge circle and ended up right where I started as I was in front of the office again! It was almost 5AM by that point and all I could do was cry in frustration as I took a much longer route home. I showered, put on fresh clothes and went back to work at 9AM.
4. As a newly hired manager (new to the company), I was putting some pressure on a senior staff working for me to get his assignments done and to get the work papers to me for review so that we can wrap up year-end. He brought them in bags–three plastic bags and one reusable shopping bag. Inside, the papers were either binder clipped or rubber banded. When I asked why they weren't organized and properly presented for review in binders with tab separations, he said he didn't have those things and he didn't have a hole puncher either. When I told him to get them from the supply closet, he said it would take him two additional days. Fuming, I sent him away. I organized, hole punched, and bound everything in less than 2 hours myself.
