Things are more casual here in California, but I agree with the others that it's better to be overdressed than under.
I think you should go with a suit, no tie on the first day. I'm guaranteeing that business casual will be required attire when you are at clients and in the office, though you will have a few exceptions.
When I was in public accounting the rule at my local SF firm was to dress to level of the CFO. So if the CFO wore a suit we had to wear a suit. Thankfully I was never staffed at any of those clients.
Frankly, I think guys have it much easiter for business casual: dress shirt and slacks. I guess women could wear that too, but BORING.
Anyhow, even though I'm in industry now, I still wear business casual to work (I dress to the level of my boss' boss) and jeans on Friday.
