I am just curious, what is your opinion on connecting with people on LinkedIn that you don’t know? I am going to be looking for a new job here soon after I pass my last exam, and have been putting out some feelers, strengthening my LinkenIn profile and network, etc. I would like to get a tax position at one of the regional CPA firms in my area. Would it be appropriate to connect with the recruiters of these firms?

I accept all requests, LinkedIn is not a friends only facebook type of social media where you post personal thoughts and photos. It is there for business networking purposes. And the more connections you have the better off you are to network with many companies.

I'd accept an invitation from someone I don't know. Sure, why not? This is business.

Since you are an linkedin, I assume you are looking to change jobs. What better why to broaden your horizon than to connect with s many people in your field as possible. Think of it as this big networking event. The cool thing is that once your connecting you can go to that persons profile and see who they are connected with and then connect with them.

I pretty much accept everyone's request unless I have absolutely no clue who the person is and they're not from a business field. I've also been trying to grow my network recently and send out a couple of requests every day to people I find.

And true to his word, Jeff accepts all requests.

If you are a business professional, whether I “know you” or not, I'm connecting with you on LinkedIn. That's the point of LinkedIn, it's not to connect with only people you know, it's to connect with people who are in the similar industry, or a connected industry that you can eventually get to know later on down the line or participate in group discussions with.

LinkedIn is the foundation of 21st century business networking in my opinion.

I appreciate all of the opinions! I took “the plunge” yesterday and sent a connect request to a recruiter for one of the local CPA firms in the area. I meant to personalize my connect request by introducing myself to him, but it didn't give me the opportunity to. I think it is because I wasn't in the guy's profile when I clicked on “connect.”

Generally my rule for accepting LinkedIn connections is that I want to have some slight clue who the person is or why/how they contacted me…so anyone from A71 I instantly know who/why; anyone else, I'd look over their profile for some clue. If they're another accountant, or also from KY, or in a related field, or studying accounting, etc., etc., that might be the reason. Basically if I can see a logical reason for them to add me, I'll accept.

And on that criteria, I'll accept just about anyone. πŸ˜‰

When I first had LinkedIn, though, I was more selective. There were a couple people that wanted to add me from school that were dolts, and since I only had a few connections, I was worried that people who knew them would think badly of me for having them as a connection…but now I realize that a) people aren't likely to know them and b) just cause they're a connection doesn't mean I'm saying they're brilliant people. πŸ˜‰

I'll accept any request from a Recruiter, even if I haven't met.

Otherwise, I'll accept any request from people that I know (even in passing) or from people I think I may know even if I don't exactly remember them. When I was looking for a job, I accepted requests from anybody (even people I didn't know) – so that when I was advertising my job search, it would reach more people and potential hiring managers and recruiters.

I'll only send out requests to classmates/teachers/co-workers or recruiters that I've met and worked with – people I know.

Also I hate to sound “cheesy,” but another great reason to add a lot of people to your LinkedIn is that when recruiters or prospective clients or current clients view your profile and it has the “500 + connections” listed, I think that just makes you appear more relevant within the current market than others. I know that's “cheesy” lol, but I believe it's true.
