I am just curious, what is your opinion on connecting with people on LinkedIn that you don’t know? I am going to be looking for a new job here soon after I pass my last exam, and have been putting out some feelers, strengthening my LinkenIn profile and network, etc. I would like to get a tax position at one of the regional CPA firms in my area. Would it be appropriate to connect with the recruiters of these firms?

guitarsalad, I do agree with you about the recruiting firms. I have only had one ok lead from a recruiting firm ever. They contacted me a couple weeks ago and I went to meet with them. Of course, they had two specific jobs that they are trying to place that they wanted to talk to me about. I told them that I wasn't interested in either of them and want to explore the public accounting route. So, they actually did give my resume to a partner at McGladrey. I haven't heard anything back yet though.

Lindrobe, That's great that they listened to you. I had bad experiences with recruiters in non-accounting roles in a previous life. My job will be going away in the next 6-10 months most likely (merged company moving headquarters), and I'll definitely talk to recruiters when that time comes. But I have to ride it out for the 6 months salary as severance pay. I'll be trying to go the public accounting route after striking out miserably during recruiting season 2 years ago when doing the same.

LinkedIn has been a good resource for me. If you're concerned about privacy and people you don't know mining through your connections for who knows what…..you can easily customize it now to just show mutual connections. 🙂
