I am just curious, what is your opinion on connecting with people on LinkedIn that you don’t know? I am going to be looking for a new job here soon after I pass my last exam, and have been putting out some feelers, strengthening my LinkenIn profile and network, etc. I would like to get a tax position at one of the regional CPA firms in my area. Would it be appropriate to connect with the recruiters of these firms?

What actually freaks me out are people that check my profile anonymously, I wish linkedin could just suck it up and show me the people that view my profile in anonymity. Its my personal page for Christ sake!

I have been looking to change jobs and I must say that LinkedIn has actually been helpful. I paid one month for premium access and started looking up recruiters for the companies that I was nterested in working for. I even reached out to a VP of Internal Audit at one company. She responded and was very helpful on what I needed to do.

I have applied to one company for a while and I never seemed to get an interview. So last week the recruiter there looked at my profile. I went to the company website and saw that they were hiring for a senior position. I submitted my application and emailed him on Linkedin that I was vey interested. I had a phone interview the next day and that same day also had a phone interview with the hiring manager. I just had my in person interview Wednesday. I have had 2 interviews so far just from reaching out on LinkedIn. Just waiting to see if I get an offer.

It has worked in my favor. I also made sure that I had good detail in my profile. I never cared about LinkedIn till this year because I just did not see the ways I could use it during my job search. Good Luck!

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

Gosh, suck different perspectives on this topic. Ruggercpa2b, thanks for sharing! I hope you get your offer! I am like you and didn't care about LinkedIn till a couple months ago, so I am kind of like a LinkedIn rookie.

All right, because of differing perspectives, it's up to you, the individual. If you only accept requests from people you know (such as I do), that's fine. If you accept requests from people you don't know, that's fine too. There is no right or wrong answer (although some are better than others). Just my 2 cents.

If someone were a recruiter from an accounting firm or a company in industry, I would have no issue reaching out to that person on LinkedIn. If a firm or industry recruiter were reaching out to me, I would strongly consider accepting their request. The way I look at it is that it's their job to recruit people to their company and listen to people who want to work there.

The difference to me is in recruiting firms (Robert Half and the like) constantly reaching out to people on LinkedIn. I wouldn't have an issue talking to them were I in a position to be looking for a job. But when I'm not actively looking, I feel like they're sending out requests nonstop and dragging the waters for anyone who roughly fits the job description for the wide net that they cast. I currently have dozens of such requests pending on LinkedIn just because I don't want to deal with the continual contact when I won't be looking for a job for several more months.
