On campus interviews

So i have a few interviews coming up over the next few days with firms that declined to interview me last year (my senior year of college). Honestly, I believe the fact I listed that I was currently studying for the cpa exam as a major helper but who knows because my gpa has dropped slightly from last year. So is it ok to ask about busy season during an on campus interview? Last year I asked about salary during these interviews (only had 2) and I honestly think that was a big no no obviously. I never really did research on interviewing prior to my important interviews with public firms so I think that def hurt me.

Typically I try to have a few questions to ask at the end of the interview and typically they are the following: What is the company culture like, what is typical job duties and hours (if not explained earlier), and what busy season is like. I may add a question about studying advice for CPA exam or another question about the most interesting audit/etc. Am I on the right track with questions? I honestly want a job in public so bad because I feel it really helps any accountants long term career potential. Thanks for any advice!

Don't ask what the company culture is like. For your own good, don't.

Do some research on this topic and come up with good questions, it's important.

Do you want public or do you want nice hours?

I mean sure, some firms might have friendlier hours than others, but for the most part, there are shity parts of the year. And even if you are trying to determine which firm is the least shity and you are very willing to work long hours as needed…

    a. Nobody will accurately paint the picture of the hours

    b. It says that you are concerned about hours, in which case, they aren't interested, even if, comparably that firm works less than others.

So, dont bring up hours, dont bring up pay.

The search on this site kinda sucks, but if you click my name and look at recent threads or try the search for interview questions I posted some decent ones a while back. Try to make your questions conversational, scratch the “what is typical job duties” and go with your question about what was their most interesting audit.

    Ask about the partner/manager's industry(s).

Ask about how you would fit into the big picture in terms of an engagement.

Ask about the typical day for a staff.

Ask about what kind of client interaction you can expect as a staff.

    So many more… etc.
