I am an untraditional candidate in my mid 20’s who hopes to get in on campus recruiting next year when I am completing my Master’s (Bachelor’s was unrelated to Accounting).

Serious questions: During the recruiting/interview process, can I talk about the fact that I have a young child at home? Does this matter to Big 4 recruiters?

I doubt anyone will ask me point-blank if I have children, but my son (and husband) are such a huge part of who I am, I would have to work really hard not to casually talk about them.

Agree with Pubmaster, although all of my experience has been in industry once an employer is comfortable with your ability to prioritize, meet deadlines they will have flexibility for you to balance work and family. Its just during the interview stage when you start on a level playing field of 6-12 candidates that you don't want then to become concerned about your ability to manage. You get the job first then show them you can!

Just steer your kids towards sports that don't coincide with busy season LOL.

Thanks, PubMaster. Your answer gives me hope I don't have to choose between being a crappy mom/wife or a crappy employee.

mla- I'm going through my first tax season right now in an admin position. It's no joke.

mla is dead on! And no problem at all. My experience in industry is that it's more old-school, but literally everyone here has family so they all understand, haha. 🙂
