    Hello All,

I was offered a position as a controller/bookkeeper within a family run firm in the wholesale meat department industry. The pay and hours are fine, but there are two issues, both of which the owner was up front about. The first is that the position was available b/c the previous controller, who was there for 20 years, had a falling out with the owner, as the owner put it, the controller forgot he wasn’t the boss. The second issue is the G/L is essentially all entered manually. He did say that he would want to go electronically, but for now the entries are hand written into a journal. Do you think these are valid concerns?

Well, all those who said to run away were right. I called him up this afternoon ( 24 hours after receiving the offer) and he said, I decided to hire someone else w/more experience. As mentioned I did have a very bad experience with this type of situation and quick moving, need to make a decision right away, so its best that his true colors were revealed before I accepted and then he decided to get rid of me just as quickly. I am working right now, and have an interview tomorrow morning as a staff accountant, so we'll see… Interestingly, right after we hung up I received noticed that I passed BEC, so that gave me an extra boost of encouragement.

Way to go on the BEC win! I am glad you didn't move and further on the offer. I guarantee it would've been a nightmare. You'll find the right job soon. Keep your head up.

I love small companies, so long as they are stable (as this one appears to be). It would be much better experience if you also managed at least one person, with that I think you could take that managerial experience and slowly move up in a controller function but with bigger companies down the road. Without that, most recruiters down the road will see this for what it is, a small operation where the controller probably doesn't have to deal with too many controller type issues. At best an accounting manager level with a good title.

I'm assuming you haven't taken the job yet…if not…I would discuss the potential to hire a clerk to do some of the manual bookkeeping, while you can supervise and provide higher level accounting (and maybe finance/FP&A type work as well). The beauty of small companies is that usually you can shape your job so much more than at a larger company where you are stuck in a box. If you start poking at ways to shape your job and he responds with something like “this is what the position is” or reacts somewhat defensively…I would move on to greener pastures. The position as it exists is not going to help you down the road…
