If you have worked or currently work at a Big 4 or large regional firm in the tax department, how many clients does a tax manager or tax senior associate handle at any given time?

9/15 just ended, at that time I had 5. After that 9/30 and 10/15s start for a lot of them but it depends on whether you roll off those clients or stick with them year round. So right now I have one of my big annual clients that basically requires me at the client every day but I still work on 2-3 other clients. Some people continue to have their 4-5 as they do states.

I would say a good average is minimum 4. The exception being if you're on a client where you're doing quarterlies, provision, rtp, year end.. then you might luck out in terms of number of clients but you're making up for it with a lot of long nights.

@bigfourexpert thank you for your response. Are you a manager, or what is your level at your employer?

I don't get into personal details just for the sake of anonymity, but I'm speaking from experience. Some people get slammed with “mini” clients if their area of expertise is in demand, like R&D or Indirect. In that case, you may technically only have 4-5 clients, but you're constantly getting requests by people to look at stuff so you really have like 10.
