I have a BBA in Public Accounting and finished with a 3.65 GPA a few years ago. I have 3 years experience in Non-Profit as a Staff Accountant doing mainly general ledger accounting and some minor internal audit functions. This is the only experience that I have. I have passed two of the CPA exam sections and plan on finishing the other two by early next year.
My question is, do you think it would be advantageous to try to find a audit position at a CPA firm that specializes in government/non-profit audits? The CPA firm that performs the annual audit at my current agency works mostly with non-profits and government agencies. Or do you think it would be better to have experience auditing private businesses?
My goal is to obtain my CPA license after getting two years of public experience (at a local firm) and then transition back into the non-profit sector, eventually as an asst controller and maybe controller at some point down the line.
I do enjoy the non-profit industry and don’t have aspirations to make a career in public accounting or work for a large public/private company. I feel that having experience auditing non-profits (combined with my G/L non-profit experience) would be great when trying to get an asst controller position in non-profit after completing my CPA.
Any advice would be appreciated.
