I don't know anything about public accounting, but I would think that the number of accounting classes you have to take just to be eligible to sit for the exam would be the equivalent to the accounting degree. My degrees are in business but I had to go back and take 24 upper level accounting classes to sit for the exam (12 more to be licensed) so in all I will have taken every accounting class that someone with an accounting major would have taken. AND you will have passed the CPA exam so I don't really think it matters what your actual degree was in.

CPA Exam - Finally DONE (November 2014)
    BEC (08/10/13) 80
    AUD (08/24/13) 65 (11/13/13) 85
    FAR (04/12/14) 81
    REG (07/19/14) 69 (11/29/14) 87!!

for most unis, i've seen the certificate of accounting, accounting ba, and masters of accounting almost always have the basic requirements to sit for the CPA exam. So if you qualify for the exam, you have by most university standards an accounting degree

How were you approved by your state's board (pertaining to the education requirements) to sit for the exam? And at the Big 4 I'm with, I've met a couple people with a non accounting/finance degree, all of which were in the Advisory practice.

I worked at Andersen until they got crushed in 2002 and then I went to private companies. There were several Econ majors who became CPAs at Andersen. I'm sure it is not unusual- but I was in the Tax group so I don't know about Audit.

    FAR Passed 5/28/14
    AUD Passed 1/22/13
    BEC Passed 7/12/13
    REG Passed 5/9/14
Virginia CPA license issued July 2014

You can try applying to the Risk Advisory (Deloitte, EY, KMPG) / Risk Assurance (PwC) positions at the Big 4. I'm about to start full time at one of those and a few people in my internship class were non accounting/finance majors. The most popular major outside of those was Information Systems. I'm sure you could apply to other types of advisory as well as an Economics major. Having your CPA would really help though.
