I’ve done my time (3.5 years) and improved upon my weak areas in tax, recently finished the exam in December.. and just found out that I was passed over for promotion. I don’t get it. I’m beyond pissed. All the evenings and weekends ruined to pass the exam; was assured that the exam was the only thing in my way for the promotion and then this sucker punch. Seriously thinking about jumping ship… I don’t have my license yet so I can’t edit my resume to “John Doe, CPA” yet. Why would I want to stay at a place who doesn’t appreciate what I’ve given up for them? Sick of making old white guys rich.

Anyone else deal with this BS?

Me being latino may be a compounding factor but I don't think that it is the main thing. If I was a son of a vp regardless if I was latino or not I think things would have gone differently. I think that it is more related to social and class issue. Since. I don't think they disliked me at first (they do now after hr)as much as they just didn't care about trampling all over me since I didn't have much to offer in the I scartch your back you scratch mine. Now being latino made it more likely that this would be the case but not the reason for it in of itself.

That said, I have a blonde hair white western european friend who is poor and after hearing his foster care story people are very charitable. He even received a free car that was only a few years old while in college from someone he barely knew.

The reason why I asked you is because in the company I used to work for one of the staffs did not get a promotion because he was not that fluent in English according to them. I just think they don’t like him. I used to work for this Billion dollar company down in South Florida. Since we only had 4 CPAS out of 40 Accountants, the company decided to purchase Becker for 10 Accountants (2 Directors 4 Managers 2 Seniors and 2 Staff). They only bought 5 licenses from Becker, so each couple had to share one software. To make a long story short, out of the 10 Accountants, only one passed the CPA exam after 14 months, and he was the Staff Accountant I mentioned earlier. He received a bonus and after 2 years, he has not been able to get a promotion supposedly because is hard to understand his English, and he wouldn’t be able to attend meetings. Both of the Directors are now Senior Directors, and still have not bother taking the exam.

Very interesting story. I actually was born here but my parents were immigrants. I don't even speak spanish (I have a very foriegn name thoguh) but they did try to use communication as a reason why I was not being promoted… I did not receive more input as to what they meant by communication however.

Its easy to speak to other people when they actually want to talk to you though. If the people in power visibly don't want to communicate with you they will then turn around and say its your communication that is lacking.

Similar story, they were hiring a postion and this one guy had two bachelor degrees one in acturial science and one in accounting with a real high gpa like 3.8 or 3.9 and he had experience. I noted that he started going to school in ghana a country in africa(started but finished here) to which others that heard started laughing for whatever reason. The manager replied… ‘Oh, do you think his accent will be a problem?'

Funny thing is that Ghana s official language is english…. Any educated person would speak fluent english because their schools are in eglish.

Well they didn't end up interviewing him due to that which is curious because her subordinate and good friend is bulgarian who does speak with an accent and fumbles over words occasionally(she is understandable though).

Another person that they did bring in was chinese who got their bachelors degree in china with.

Never said discrimination needed to be rational and make sense right?

Dude, once you become a CPA, I suggest that you start sending out your resume. Just dont quit before you actually start looking for a job. Corporations are like some women, they want you when you are already taken.

I am prepared to change teams at the very least. The benefit of where I work is excellent location and excellent tuition reimbursement. We will see where life takes me after the CPA and possibly MBA, at the very least I am gaining valuable experience.
