MemberI’ve done my time (3.5 years) and improved upon my weak areas in tax, recently finished the exam in December.. and just found out that I was passed over for promotion. I don’t get it. I’m beyond pissed. All the evenings and weekends ruined to pass the exam; was assured that the exam was the only thing in my way for the promotion and then this sucker punch. Seriously thinking about jumping ship… I don’t have my license yet so I can’t edit my resume to “John Doe, CPA” yet. Why would I want to stay at a place who doesn’t appreciate what I’ve given up for them? Sick of making old white guys rich.
Anyone else deal with this BS?

MemberMaybe his attitude became like this due to being mistreated? Or should he just allow everyone to kick him in teeth and take it with a smile? What if he was not ‘fitting in' because people didn't want to associate with him because of hiss race, should he still smile about it?
For example, my manager could not believe what was happening to me, her having experienced people going out of their way to ‘network' with her and giving her the benefit of the doubt.
It is easy to be a ‘good fit' when everyone wants to ‘network' with you for whatever reason, attractive face, work satus, social status.
I grew up in poverty, no friends or family, not established network at work. People mostly ignored me at best or trampled all over me at worse. Despite me being more outgoing and first to talk to someone new and to introduce myself, that matters very little outside initial first impression most of the times. If you don't have something that others want they will not bother ‘networking' with you.
For instance, one individual who has years less experience than me is a jersey shore girl who got the job by leaving her gpa off her resume. She was bragging how her professors to told her she would never find a job. She constantly makes condescending and borderline racist remarks, yet everyone bends over backward to ‘network' with her.
The unfortunate truth is that being nicer and pleasant and outgoing in of itself will not make you fit in. In fact, the things that matter more, status, work or social, means that you don't necessarily need to be nice or outgoing because people will approach you.
Not being a good fit or needs to work on communication skills is often just an excuse that is used by others who don't want to associate with you. Like when they tried to tell me that I was not going to get the promotion they said ‘well why didn't you ask about what you needed to do to get the promotion'. Both my manager's manager said this and my vp, but surprise! I did do that with my manger and she confirmed it with hr.
Unfortunately, in corporate america unless you have an objective ear (ie hr) it is not about being right. If you are not liked or have something that others want, if you are wrong they wil hold it against you… If you are right, they will change the rules to make you wrong.

MemberListen guys, you have to learn to play the game to get to where you want to go…Everyone has to play their own individual game. You may see and know that others have more of an advantage in some areas than you but that is the hand you were dealt so put your poker face on and play your hand. Using the example above, the woman who was able to snag a job by not disclosing her GPA…she played the game to her advantage. You have to find your own way to the top and having a chip on your shoulder will not help. It will show up at work and you will seem like a potential issue to management instead of an asset. You have to ignore comments that offend you in the day to day that people make because there will always be someone who makes an offensive statement at some point. Not saying this lightly but you are going to have to be 10 times as good as the person next to you to get to where you want to go. You don't have to suck up but there will be times where you will have to smile, grit your teeth, and ignore that knot in your stomach. It's not fair but it's reality. Also, culturally speaking, there may be socially awkward moments but the more you experience them the better you will be at them. Just my two cents…

ParticipantYou sound like someone who would rather blame other people for the lack of your own accomplishments.
With the way you think, you don't come off as someone who should be in a leadership role.

MemberNot sure if that is directed towards me or the op but, my manager gave me the go ahead with the promotion… They tried to cover it up… Hr agreed with me and I got the promotion and significant pay raise.it was so bad that my manager s manager (she was ny original manager prior to getting promoted the prior year) felt like she was okay with raising her hand in a striking motiona gainst me. Although I know she wouldn't have struck it was more about what the body posture and her feeling that she could do that and out was okay
Futhermore, it wasn't a matter of performing average vs performing well enough to receive a promotion, on one side my actual manager was saying I was performing above average, on the other side, my managers manager who was gone for the second half of the year due to maternity leave was saying I was underperforming or at least that was everyone elses interpretation
The vp who was not aware at first of the actual situation tried to use the annual appraisal that my manager had written up with the intent to be used as for me getting a promotion, aginst me getting a promotion clearly indicating it wasn't even read.

InactiveI experienced something similar while at Big 4. Fresh from college and naive, I thought everyone is your friend – not in corporate America. 3 years passed and no promotion. It was very challenging especially after putting all those hours. My weakness was that I am more of a introvert. I do network but to my limits. Won't hang out to talk trash. And like someone here mentioned that you have to be 10 times good to make it up. I didn't put 10 times effort coz for the same pay, I didn't want to put 10 times more effort (my fault). I thought it was the company or the environment so I jumped ship to another Big 4 after being offered a senior role. Decided to put extra effort this time around and was acknowledged by some managers/directors but our office had one director who was a B$!. She pulled all the shots in the office and she decided she wouldn't let any one do well except for her close “pets”. I was so sick of this drama that I moved to industry with a significant pay raise. In my exit interview I told HR about this director and her games. She quit within a few months and her couple of pets followed suit. Like they say it's not about what you know, it's about who you blow. Also, a good friend/manager once said that you have to have at least two managers in your pocket to back you in Big 4.

MemberI used to be passed up for promote because they told me i was 1. too young and 2 i didn't have my designation at the time. Even though i was just exam away from obtaining it.
Later on a new hire came along 4 yrs younger to me with a CA and he got the position I applied for. It did raise my eyebrow a bit.
I figured well if i was going to an reason like Age and Designation being the reason I couldn't be a supervisor then well, I should look for another opportunity.
I later heard from friends I have in the company that the main reason why that guy got promoted and kept getting promoted was because he was golf buddies with the CFO… so i guess moral of the story for me is learn to play Golf with people in high places (“,)

ParticipantTo the folks who seem to believe the tone of the OP on an anonymous message board gives you some insight into the reasons why they weren't promoted , go read the tone of your responses. If those responses indicate your demeanor toward your peers, you may be lucky to find yourself employed at all 🙂
