I wanted to get an idea from some people on the forum what range my salary should fall in based on my situation. I work in the tax dept. at a regional firm in NJ close to NYC. I have passed the cpa exam. I expect my license to be official in Feb of 2015. I will complete my Masters in Tax in May of 2015. I have two tax seasons under my belt and I work pretty closely with the partners of the firm on all types of returns (1040, 1041, 1065, 1120), some of which are pretty high level.

Are you going for a small firm, midsized or big 4 in jersey? I work in North Jersey, midsized.

I think 60-65 is what you can expect with your masters and 2 tax seasons behind you. The CPA might get you a bonus or a few thousand more, nothing really crazy. Even at Big 4, its just a bonus. Masters is why I say possibly 65. Its more about experience. I think after 3 more years (5 seasons down), you should expect to make significantly more, possibly 80-100 range.

At the three year mark with a CPA and an MST? I'd say you could get $70, maybe even $75k. You'd get that at the Big 4, no problem.

What exactly is the southern part of North Jersey? Princeton?

Union county area. I could definitely get more at a big 4 but I value the work/life balance I have at my current firm. The hours aren't too terrible

That's ‘the southern part of North Jersey'?!?

I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. I'm originally from southern Gloucester County. My family refers to my current county (Burlington) as ‘North Jersey'.

Princeton is not South Jersey. People tend to forget there is still an hour and a half of Jersey South of the area. Princeton is 100% central NJ. South Jersey is anything below Toms River…you know, where they start becoming Eagles fans

Toms River is the Jersey Shore. Totally different section.

I lived in Beach Haven on LBI for about ten years. It was interesting in the Fall. Giants and Yankees fans would flood Eagles/Phillies country on the weekends. Bar fights ensued.

I agree about Princeton, though. It's definitely Central.
