New hire question

Kind of a silly dilema here. In a couple of months I will be working on one of the mid tier accounting firms. On the offer they said that they give a bonus for passing other certifications on top of the CPA. Does it look bad if I call HR to make sure that the CMA qualify for that bonus? Am I overthinking this? I do not want to look greedy/desperate or unfocused.

I was planning to take the exam before I got hired, but taking the job requires a certain amount of investment. So if the exam does not qualify I will have to postpone the exam. On the other hand if it does I would like to take one part before starting on busy season. That is why I wanted to ask HR on the first place.

It's not wrong to feel curious. You're merely asking for a clarification.

Just ask, what could it hurt?

Thanks for the reply hasy. I am leaning towards that same thinking.

Does anyone have any other input?

I agree with hasy. Just ask. What's the worst thing that could happen? Someone recognizes that you're eager to advance your career and looking ahead, making plans, etc. If you're worried about appearing “greedy” (which I honestly don't think you will), you could always phrase it along the lines of “I've been considering pursuing my CMA and wanted to know if that would have value to the firm, or if there is another credential that would be more beneficial as I plan my career…” etc. Just make sure one of your follow-up questions gives you a concrete yes/no on the bonus.
