I am returning to school to earn a Masters in Taxation, and then plan to study for my CPA. I have zero desire or interest to work in public accounting. My interest seems to be towrds representation and controversy work – Preparing individual and business returns for the steady money.

At the end of my program in (about 12 more months) I will have my 150 hours, and plan to apply for a state where my accumulated 150 hours will be satisfactory (I loathe accounting, I like tax, but loathe accounting – but I respect the knowledge it represents)

I have a solid 12 months ahead of me, plus 3-5 months solid study for each section – study, test, pass – repeat 4 times..

Any thinking on what I can do with an MTax and CPA, or an Mtax, while studying for my CPA

    thank you all.

@Christopher- That is the plan, but I'm hearing they might give a hard time if you already have an advanced degree. I'm going to try to get it anyway.

@christopher Why not look into forensic accounting if you're interested in the criminal side of accounting? You could look into jobs at the FBI since you're former military and getting a security clearance would be fairly easy for you. Just a thought…

@atx I've thought about forensic acctng. ‘thought' about it… another side to my past life post military is a decade in law enforcement (patrol, tactical, very specialized invesitgative, administrative). I have no interest in carrying another badge nor the bureaucracy of DOJ. If I were 15 years younger, yes, but now, different part of my life. Some mid-life crisis – Im completing my Mtax and CPA (theres the proverbial porche!)

One of my buddies still on the job, is a former SA, he did 3 years in So Cal, and came back to the civilian LE world. However, I am in my later 40s now, max age for federal appointment is 38 before subtracting military. Besides, Im nearing 50, theres the real issue of ‘ageism' subtle or not.
