    Hi All,

I’m currently studying for the exams/grad school part time online at an in state school (will finish in ’15). I’m hoping to find a public job by the ’14 recruiting season. I’m looking for tips or things I may have overlooked networking wise, my current plan of action is as follows:

    1) Family/friends networking, I have strong links to industry accounting but not much to public, unfortunately.

    2) On campus job fairs/events when I can make the 3hr trip, I’ll certainly make the big ones.

    3) Building my linkedin, and on another note, what is the etiquette for contacting firm recruiters there?

    4) Working with 3rd party recruiters I’ve found jobs with before.

Past that, is it appropriate to “cold call” my resume off to regional and smaller firms that don’t recruit at my school?

    Thanks.

NM–I just realized you are three hours from campus. My suggestion was to join Beta Alpha Psi.

    B - 81 (8/31/13) first attempt!
    A - 80 (2/3/14) first attempt!
    R - 89 (7/31/13) first attempt!
    F - 86 (7/2/13) first attempt!
    Licensed CPA: 12/31/14

Unfortunately I became an accounting major pretty late in undergrad (and also had to drag my GPA out of the mud, but that's a story about an 18 yo idiot..), and didn't join BAP or similar. I did join the VITA club as a tax preparer at my Alma Mater, though.

With my grad school being three hours off and working full time at my staff accounting job, joining BAP there would be a stretch.

Edit: Saw your own edit, thanks for the suggestion though, that's good advice for most.

Since you are already working… How about joining a professional society, like ASWA? Are you a woman? If not, look into professional associations that relate to the field you are interested in. Maybe even a Users Group for the software you use at work? Local Chamber of Commerce?

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
