Question on Networking. I am a little shy when it comes to speaking to people so I am going to need help on this one. When it comes to networking with someone and you want to ask them if there’s job openings, exactly how do you go about it without asking them directly or being rude? If you were to run into or approach a manager or even staff member, what would you say? Help?

Start by introducing yourself in a friendly, confident way. I'd also be direct, but instead of simply just asking if there are any job openings, do some research on the company (if you know ahead of time) before you approach the anyone. Based on your research, prepare a list of questions that you (genuinely) want to ask about or have the staff/manager clarify. You don't have to memorize this list. It's just for your own reference for small talk that shows you're enthusiastic and truly interested in the company, rather than just another person looking for a job. If you get nervous or shy, practice a 30-second introduction at home – your name, what you're doing now, why you're approaching this person (what kind of job are you looking for), why you're interested in Company X. I'm pretty shy myself, so preparation helps me feel more confident about approaching other people.

Also, bring a few copies of your resume. You never know what may happen, so just come prepared. Be sure to tailor it a bit before you print them out. Best of luck!

Keep your eyes and ears open. I found my job from a patron at the bar I was tending during school. Turns out the guy was an Executive Partner at the firm. I bought him a few Johnny Walkers and he got me a job.

Be polite and listen more than you talk. It shows you care. People normally come across as being more intelligent that way too.

Get involved in a charity or NFP. The boards are normally loaded with accountants.

Unless the event is specifically for networking or a job fair, I wouldn't just hand out the resume. It's not very professional and can come across as desperate.

During conversation, inquire about their job. Naturally, they'll probably ask you the same and that is when you'll tell them that you're in the process of seeking employment. It's pretty basic. I did this recently and jokingly asked him if he was hiring. Of course, he was only a staff accountant, but gave me the name of the HR manager and allowed me to use him as a reference.
