Fellow Ninjas I need your help!

I am scheduled to interview for a financial reporting position with one of the biggest construction and engineering firm in the country. I m getting a little bit nervous as the days go by, this is because I have only been working in accounts payable and I got this interview because the job requires a CPA candidate.

I don’t have any prior experience in accounting department, accounts payable is what I do and I know its just a smaller component of the accounting cycle.

What kind of technical accounting questions do you think will be thrown at me ? I will also appreciate it if someone can give a brief description of daily activities of an accountant/financial reporting. I have the job description but I need more insight and perspectives.

Any tips, advice or suggestions will be deeply appreciated

The irony of human resource employees is that they are paid on the premise that there is actually some sort of skill involved with regards to employing people. Granted there is up to a certain level, once a person has basic qualifications it is a crap-shoot as anyone who is well versed in psychology, both personal and trans-personal, can attest that there is no guarantee about who will undergo what at any certain time given any variable personal history.

I am working for a big pharma company as external reporting. My word of advise would be get to know their 10-Q and K and all the press releases. And ask them questions about it during the interview, it will show you do your homework since you will be doing financial reporting. I dont know if I would get hang up on all the technical questions since most company have different accounting procedures, different consolidation policy, you pretty much learn on the job. Read their Q and K inside out.

stoleway: I would but it probably wouldn't help you.

I remember I once talked to a trader or businessman who was employing a group to work under him. I asked him, we were on a boat, what he thought was most important on a resume. He said he didn't give a damn what was on their resume except the absolute amount of money they were maintained. I felt sorry for the guy. He was clearly not going to be successful.

The second lady there, was a human resource agent, mentioned that she through away resume's that spoke in the present tense for jobs had.

I thought both of them were sour and unhappy people.

I'm not sure if this helps. Maybe it made you laugh. I say do your best to interview and if it's meant to be they'll be lucky enough to have you.

I know in France they use handwriting to determine if a person has a big or small ego. We might laugh at their methods but you can bet that interviewing and employing is mostly a pseudoscience at best.

Of all the advice I read here the person who posted above me gave the best – I think. I would read their financials, be humble, take deep breaths, maintain eye contact and don't get upset or annoyed if they question you or slight you – it may be a test to see how reactive you are. In court, they do this to doctors, to see if they are easy for the kill in lawsuits.
