Hello everyone. My name is Brett and I am seeking career advice from experienced accountants. I recently got a job at a manufacturing company as a staff accountant. I’ve been here for about 2-3 months. I don’t want to give out to much information but they have a plan for me. When I interviewed for the job I was told that there would be a lot of analysis work along with other normal accounting duties. However since I have been here all I have been doing is a lot of data entry type stuff like entering new cost information, etc. The only time I ever do anything accounting related really is around month end and even then it’s very easy stuff, not challenging at all. We don’t really do any analysis type work, that I have seen so far anyway. Also they have me doing a lot of things that aren’t even remotely accounting related that I can’t speciifically say. There are a lot of other things I want to throw in here but I don’t want to give out too much information for obvious reasons. Just to note, they do pay me well. I’ve been beginning to wonder, is this what a real world accounting job is like, or?
I graduated from an accredited university with a GPA over 3.5. I started this job pretty much right out of college.
Also I’ve been considering taking the CPA but I’m not sure if I have the motivation to do it right now while working full time. Maybe I just take 6 months and knock it out? Not sure if gaps in employment are ok because of the CPA exam though. I don’t plan on becoming an auditor, but I do have aspirations of applying to federal agencies one day.
Anyways with all this being said, any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
