I am current living in Houston Texas and taking accounting classes to be eligible to sit for CPA. I overheard from someone in my accounting class that she will apply for CPA through Delaware since requirements are light. I am thinking about doing something similar. I found many states with very low requirements like Delaware. I can qualify for all of them. I have an economics degree, but i have been working in operational accounting in oil&gas. Only reason I want to take the exam is that I will qualify for more positions and will make it easier to get jobs. I do not care about the certificate itself. I just want to show on my resume that i passed all four exams. Based on this, does it make sense to apply outside of Texas? Window of opportunity is closing down though. States are increasing their requirements substantially. I need to act fast before it is too late.

Also, If I pass all the CPA exams but I don’t take any cpe classes, don’t pay the annual dues or don’t work under a CPA, what happens? Again, i need the exam only to put on my resume.

Personally, I've never understood why anyone would want to take the CPA exam just to have 4 scores to put on a resume. Pass the exam, get the experience, get the education and get a license! Those three letters are worth a lot more than 4 scores. Just my .02 worth.

You literally want to go through all that hassle, money, and time and NOT get the certificate?! I think once you start studying for them, you will want that effing thing. You are probably close to having everything you need in regards to education, so as Kricket said, just go through it all and get the title.

It's not passing the exams that makes you more marketable it's having the license. If you've passed the exams but don't get licensed all you can do is put it in the education section of the resume but you can not lead people to believe you are a CPA. If you let your license lapse (by not taking the continuing ed requirements) you also cannot hold yourself out as a CPA.

But it is ok to be licensed in another state as long as you're not providing attest services in which case many employers will require that you are licensed in a particular state.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Thank you all for great responses. I did not get interviews many times because I do not have the accounting degree. I agree that it makes sense to get the title and maintain it. What about getting the CPA through different state? Would that be a problem later? I am sure i will never work in the public accounting or auditing. I will definitely stay in the private sector. What do you guys think? Would you suggest any state for licence?

“Again, i need the exam only to put on my resume.”

Chew on this as food for thought:

When I was studying for the exam and passed a few, I got lukewarm responses, at best, when I applied for jobs.

Now, as a CPA, I just applied for a job and within 4 hours I got a response asking me for an interview – – in a different country.

It's worth it, trust me. I know it seems like a huge hassle, but it is worth it. Best of luck to you!

I have been told by a senior manager at that she doesn't have 150 hours but she's been in public accounting over 4 years as a CPA so she basically got the reciprocation from the TX Board of Accountancy. Is there a CPA that overlooks your work or you report to? This could potentially serve as getting a license through Delaware initially and later when you reach 4 year mark, you can get reciprocation. Of course, this is the longer way around it but maybe it's also more convenient since you won't have to sink any more money on classes and doing homework/studying for tests? I do agree that CPA licence pays you back in ways you can't imagine.
