I’ve been in my current position for about 9 months and I do month-end close for a private company. After a few months, I have gotten the hang of things but now I have a lot of down time. I have offered to help on various projects but I really have not gotten more work. It seems like I probably will not get more in the near future. I left public accounting because I didn’t like tax but I was busy and challenged there. Would I have more work at a publicly traded company? Also, does anyone know of accounting firms that outsource their financial reporting?

I am in your same situation and my take is that you should do one of two things with your time. 1) Take it upon yourself to create changes to processes that are commonly complained about, then present them to your boss. This is what I have recently done myself. 2) Identify skills needed for the next opportunity you would like to pursue and use your free time to work on them. The workload from Public/Private depends on the company.

    Hope this helps
