Meeting the Education Requirement – Advice Needed

I recently graduated with a BA in Economics with 180 quarter units. I have fulfilled the business related courses, which leaves the economics classes and ethic course (as well as fulfilling the 225 total quarter units) for licensure. I want to take the CPA exam as soon as possible, while I have a lot of free time on my hands. From my understanding I can’t take the exam until the education requirement is fulfilled. I have looked into various accounting certificate programs but many of them are at least a year long. I feel confident enough to knock out 24 units in a semester or over two quarters, but have found no programs that allow for such courseload.

How would you guys recommend I proceed? My father was recently disabled and so I plan to spend the next couple of months at home with him. I figure this to be as good a time as any to be taking courses (preferably online).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

CA allowed me to take community college classes. I took 24 units in two semesters from four different community colleges. Most of the classes were online. Not sure what state you are in or the rules for your state.

I know some states will allow you to take the exam prior to obtaining all of the education requirements for licensure. I would double-check with your state board.

In California (I saw that your profile says you're from SD), all you need to sit for the exam are:

Baccalaureate Degree, 36 quarter units in Accounting , 36 quarter units in Business.

You'll need the 225 units for licensure though and the additional course-specific requirements if you won't be meeting licensure in time before the new education requirements get implemented.

I don't know if you meant accounting courses when you said economics above, but if you need a ton of accounting courses it might be beneficial to do a Masters in Accountancy so you actually get that degree and learn the material. If you just need a few accounting courses and/or random courses for units, take them wherever. Also note the more classes you take at other colleges, the more transcripts you have to send to the CBA.
