I graduated with a Bachelor’s in General Business and am currently going for my MBA in Accounting. I didnt know what I wanted to do when I graduated with my Bachelors. I am very good in math and began looking for analyst rolls. It was difficult because without a finance or accounting degree or internship (i did a marketing internship and was not too fond of it) I could not get an interview. I started working part time for a small company as an office/finance administrator doing bookkeeping (QuickBooks) and commission payments. I then decided to go for my MBA in Finance and got a full time job doing more QuickBooks along with project management type work for another small company. About a year ago I switched my major to accounting and have since then got an assistant controller/accounts payable position. I still dont know exactly what I want to do in terms of careers which probably isn’t great. I am contemplating going for the CPA but I have read that I need experience under a CPA which I do not have (I live in NJ). Is it still possible to become certified without this? I have also been considering going for the Enrolled Agent exams and doing taxes part time (for family and then hopefully expanding). I would love to own my own business in the future and I think this could get me started. Does it seem like I am on the right track? Is it a waste of time to take the EA exams if I only plan on using it part time and not in my job? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
