Low GPA, Job offer, one hitch

I passed my last exam recently and sent out about 15 unsolicited resumes last Monday. I got about 6 replies and sent my transcripts to 3 of them. I had a 2.5ish GPA so I wasn’t expecting much but I got a chance to explain to a couple. Exciting. I emailed back and forth with one company a few times on Wed. answering for my poor GPA and lack of experience (none). The asked my to come in for an interview last Thurs. It went well and they said they would call on Monday. They ended up offering me a job on Fri. contingent upon a background check. Problem. 6 years ago I had a wet/ reckless. I told them I would call on Mon. (tomorrow) with a decision. I am going to pursue this job and have decided to tell them about my past up-front. Small firm, will they care?

Whether or not they care about the offense, I think they would certainly care if they thought you were being misleading. Personally, I would make them aware of it beforehand. You don't need to make a production out of it or disclose more information than they need (I'm not sure what shows up on standard background checks, maybe someone else can help with that), just bring it up so they know to expect something.

I realize there are a lot of Big 4 employees on this board, so no offense to y'all, but I hated the 90 days I spent in a corporate office and LOVE small firms. I've worked in more than one and, while no owners have been as awesome as the one I'm working for now, I've found they're generally more down-to-earth people. In such an intimate workplace, they appreciate honesty more than credentials. Just be real. I'm sure they'll appreciate your candidness much more than a squeaky clean record.

Go pull a background check on yourself and see if it's on there. Just because you were arrested does not mean they put it on your record. I know for a fact that you can be arrested, plead guilty and go through the whole process and have nothing on your record. If nothing is listed, they will never know as long as you don't tell them.

I'd check it to see what it looks like for myself. If nothing's listed, don't disclose it. You can find out on Instant Checkmate. I know there are others, but that's one I know about.

I wanted to follow up on this just to help anyone searching in the future. I called this morning and explained that I was very excited about the offer but that I wanted to share something first. Employer was very down to earth and could not have cared less. Got the job. FYI i had about a 2.3 GPA in college with a 2.7 in my major. It can be done. Pass the test and all is good.

    Cheers

Can't you get that expunged? If you're not convicted of anything, I think you can get it expunged right? Although you should probably ask a lawyer.

If you are only arrested and not convicted, there isn't anything to expunge. Arrest records are state specific. Some states let them drop off after 5 years, but a conviction is a different story. Those are like luggage, you keep them for life, unless you go in front of a judge.
