Hello guys,

I been trying to look for a job as a recent graduate. However I did pretty bad in my early college careers, about a 2.5 overall gpa and my major gpa is about 2.9. For most of my accounting classes I got from B to A- and econ classes is what brought me down. Is there anything I can do to get pass my low gpa in finding a job? I am very grateful for any advice anyone can share!

I think our story is pretty similar. My GPA was only average and I actually didnt even get an Accounting BS. I got a BS in Econ. And I never had a pure accounting internship before. But I do myself with a few internships in other areas and also I voluteer for this program called VITA sponsored by the IRS. It works to give families free tax return preparations. So it would help your cause a lot if you can invest time in an internship first.

Also another route, which I choice in fact, that you can take is the CPA route. If you pass the CPA exams, I dont think many companies will care about your GPA. Also since you said you got mostly Bs and As in Accounting, maybe put just Accounting GPA on your resume. And also its not mandatory to put your GPA on your resume.

Depend on what hard means to you.

The CPA Exam requires:

1. Critical/analytic thinking abilities (need this to interpret what they are asking for).

2. A lot of practice.

3. Time for #2.

I'm sure you can find some sample questions on the internet. Give them a look and if the material looks foreign to you, don't be afraid. All it means is you have had no exposure to the topic ( which most review programs out there will prep you for in a matter of days depending on the topic), and no practice.

Don't stress about your performance in school. If you've done any research on the job prospects of Accountants (not just CPA's) you'll find they're always in demand.

I graduated with a poor GPA also but I've been successful at finding work when I really needed it. ALWAYS, ALWAYS register with a temp agency (Accountemps, Accounting Principles, Kforce, etc.). Just highlight your studies and let them know you consider yourself an accountant. Don't bother even putting your GPA on your resume.

You may not get your dream job (that's what the CPA is for) but you can always find something in an accounting department like accounts payable stuff or light bookkeeping work. Keep in mind there are a lot more people out there that have not studied accounting. Consider yourself lucky!
