Hi I am a licensed CPA but I recently lost my job because of performance issues.I was working as a Senior Accountant and in my terms I was working hard and doing well.My manager told me that I lack problem solving and analytical skills so he asked me to leave. This has happened to me the second time when I lost my jobs b because of performance reasons. At each just b my tenure was one year.Does that mean accounting is not for me, how can I help myself?.

Don't sweat it, man. You've got your CPA and 5+ years experience. It sounds like it wasn't a pleasant work environment for you.

Try to forge social relationships at the next job.

Barring technical interpretations of FASB and tax code that are unfamiliar to the accountant, accounting only becomes challenging when finding a way to solve your problem in your accounting software and records are difficult to obtain.

All other situations can be unwound and corrected. It sounds like you should've put in the time to unwind the recs to the inception of this variance.

Valar, is right. Its all about friendships in the working environment right now. The professional relationships is all but gone. Managers want friends and will hire them and fire the people that they feel don't like them. it is one of the reasons why the USA is continuing to go downhill.

I am not sure what the specific situation is, but was your manager divorced? If so, then that is a red flag as if he got screwed over in the divorce settlement and was a micromanager that tried to control everything and he saw you performing well, that is the reason why he got rid of you. That was my problem as I have lots of ability such as coding but unfortunately, it puts a target on your back.

@CPAawesomeCA If you don't have anything positive to say I think you shouldn't say anything at all. Clearly this is an intelligent individual because he was able to pass all parts of the CPA exams – regardless of how many times etc., he may have had to sit them. We all know that this journey takes persistence, sacrifice and competence to be successful.

A number of factors affect your performance on the job however; relationship with coworkers, seniors/supervisors, the culture, continuous professional development specific to your job functions.

At the end of the day, after coming this far in accounting – unless you TRULY HATE the environment I would not quit. I would however, have a candid conversation with your supervisor who is currently firing you – ask about your weak areas, ask him what he observed you did wrong, and attentively listen and take note of it. Speak to your coworkers ask them how you could have added more value in your past position – how they felt you could have been of more help.

Next, as you start your job search and even before address all the deficiencies mentioned – take online programs – Lynda, CPE courses where you are deficient etc., if you don't get a job immediately I would definitely try volunteering to see if I could learn under someone more patient and willing to promote development. At the end of the day, whether a senior likes you or not if you are producing excellent results your work will speak for itself. So keep growing, keep pushing and address your weak areas.
