    Hey guys,

I wanted to get your opinions and experience with LinkedIn. I am currently looking for a job and have totally neglected my LinkedIn. Do you think it is worth the time to update the pic, resume, and info for the job hunt? Is it really a good tool for networking?

    Thanks!

Yes but you have to pay for the upgrade service. It puts your application and profile on top of the pile to the recruiter. I got 3 interviews using it. I ultimately found my curr job on indeed.com tho so it might not be worth it. Also annoying recruiters you never contacted before call/email you about positions. In short run its worth the 30/mo or whatever it was

I also think its worth it. I did not pay for the upgrade service but was contacted by a recruiter who happened to be friends with one of my former advisors.

The recruiter got me a few interviews, and a job offer, but ultimately I chose to work for another company.

There is no guarantee, but in my opinion, its a great tool to at least get your resume out there.

It's also an awesome networking tool.

Thanks Herbie and Onmywaytocpa! I appreciate the info. I think I will start putting in some time to spruce up my LinkedIn. I have an interview with a recruiter today, so I am in job search mode . Not real optimistic since it is November, and I think December will be an “off” month since people are off for the holidays. But the silver lining is that alot of companies are working on budgets for 2012 so, I might just get lucky!

@yankeeaccountant, I'd say it's worth it. Why not? You have nothing to lose right! I'm also a big fan of indeed.com as well. Good luck Yankee! Go get them! I have my interview today, I'm nervous about the negotiation part :/

Hey Peanut–good luck to you today!! You are right, I don't think there is anything to lose, and it is free–my favorite flavor. I love Indeed too…I always check Craigslist, there seems to be alot of postings there. I am also going to get a CPA candidate membership in my state board of accountancy. I thought that might look good on the resume, and heck, maybe bring out a few networking possibilities. I just hate to fork over more cash….my pockets are more than empty after being unemployed for 8 1/2 months. UGH. On top of that, my youngest son is turning 16 in a few weeks–that car insurance is going to hurt. serenity now 🙂

Is this your first or second interview? Did you get it from a recruiter or from an ad? I hope all goes well, and don't forget, don't underestimate your experience–ask for what you want–you are worth it!!

@yankeeaccountant, I actually got this interview through a friend. She had mentioned me in passing to her boss that I was working on the CPA exams. He asked her to get my resume, I sent it the same day, they called the next day for an interview so he must have liked what he saw! This is just the first interview. It's doing property tax and tax consulting, I'm not sure how I feel about that :/ I mean… after all of the REG torture hahah But we'll see! Thanks for the luck! 🙂

I've been a member of LinkedIn for a short while. If for nothing else, it's cool to google my name and see it pop up with LinkedIn!

But as others have mentioned, there are great benefits, like it can help you get an interview/job. It's a good networking device, although honestly I don't spend too much time on it, I've got so many other things to do! (Like STUDY :))

I highly advocate using LinkedIn– I get contacted by headhunters constantly for positions, and as such have a lot of recruiter contacts to reach out to if I'm looking for a change.

I managed to get two offers, several interviews, and tons of calls/emails about great jobs. . .all from using my free account.

I'm a bit cautious about putting so much info on the Net.

I do have a profile, with almost nothing on it, and it's only to keep in touch with my former colleagues.

Yep, I still haven't updated my LinkedIn. I spoke to a recruiter yesterday, and she recommended that I spruce it up. In the two months since I started this thread I have had a handful of calls from recruiters .

@75 –I totally understand your feeling. I am not crazy about it either.

What I mean with the upgraded account is for jobs you are seeking on the jobs listings, not from recruiters seeking you. Your application goes directly to the guy who posted the job..and puts your application in the top 10. If there's 500 applications, that's worth it to be seen… recruiters cold calling are a little annoying. One even called my current employer looking for me…
