Linkedin – should I list my exam progress?

I’m almost 35 in director’s position. It’s expected at my stage that I have a CPA or MBA from a decent school.

Is it a positive or negative to draw attention to that I’m currently progressing through my exams?

On one hand, people might think “oh that guy’s on the right path?”

On the other hand, people might think “wait, why doesn’t he already have it at his age? he’s been in finance for a decade” or

“why is he even bragging about 1 or 2 exams? It’s CPA or GTFO”

At a position as high as yours and at your age I would say no.

You can but not sure if it's worth your time.

No…I don't see the point of listing it regardless of your age. I'm 33 and have a senior staff position. I tell people things on a need-to-know basis. The only people I would share my progress with are my bosses and if I were to talk to any recruiters.

I am 25 so for me I just put in my summary on LinkedIn that I was in the process of obtaining my CPA. Just because recruiters like to see that kind of thing. But for you it sounds like you are in the career/position you want so it might not even make sense to appeal to recruiters. But I also agree with others that giving too much detail in terms of ones you have passed or not might not even be worth your time.

I disagree with the “regardless of age part”. If you're in a entry-level position and want to advance I think it's worthwhile as it shows you are motivated to distinguish yourself from your peers. If you're already in a senior position then that's a different story. It just doesn't have the same weight at that point.

i have it listed on my linkedin. i'm 37, worked in accounting for 10 years but have been out of accounting for the last 4.

i don't see it as bragging, i see it as progress, but i guess if you're a startup cfo, you should already have it.

I have in the “summary” section of my profile that I passed FAR and am planning to sit for REG in April. If a potential employer looks at my profile I would want them to be aware of my CPA exam status

FAR: 80 (Gleim, Ninja Notes, Ninja MCQs)
REG: 87 (Gleim, Ninja Notes, Ninja MCQs)
BEC: 87 (Gleim, Ninja Notes, Ninja MCQs)

^^^I agree. I have in my summary that I am on the last part of the CPA exam. Anything that sets you apart from other people is worthy having on your profile if you are looking for a job. Even if you are not looking, and you have a managerial position, letting people know you are working to improve yourself gives you more credibility and makes them feel better about working with you. I can’t see anything negative about letting people know this information- just maybe not the details. I prob won’t tell people I failed AUD 2 times. 😉

With your level of experience, I would not include it until you have the actual certification. I have my progress listed on my page, but I am one position removed from entry level in private industry.

IMO, unless you are looking for a job and it is beneficial to show your progress I would not include it at all. I might have it in my summary that I am eligible for the exam, I can't remember, but I don't have sections passed nor scores.

In private industry your experience should be much more valuable than the license.

Please don't. It will only bring attention to the fact that you are NOT already a cpa.

If you wait and until when you've finished, most ppl will assume that you are FINALLY updating your LinkedIn account. They've probably assumed that you already are one. If they Google you, they might see the truth if your state board of accountancy publishes a pass list. However, most ppl won't go through the trouble of googling your license.

Plus, that puts unnecessary pressure on you. What if one of your credits expire and you lose progress? When you post stuff online, people think that information is open for discussion. I don't know about you, but I didn't like going into details on the cpa struggle. I didn't even tell my boss about my test taking until I passed all 4 sections! Spare yourself from nosey people.

I'm 40 and I've had it on my resume and Linkedin since I passed the first one. Then again, I graduated when I was 38 and didn't work in accounting.

I work for a publicly traded company with an audit committee and certifications are a huge deal. In a privately owned company they may not matter, but at mine they matter a lot. Some people have 4 of them.
