Or have some sort of actual weekly limit in terms of hours. Not only in accounting/finance, but in so many fields employers simply hire one individual for two jobs. Does anyone else feel this way? It’s pathetic when I work until 1 am some nights for no overtime. I feel like I’m being used.

sorry wasnt trying to make any directed statement just general ones. if you can make more in gov work than you are at your job you should look to switch industry jobs because you are prolly below market (maybe?).

i would agree that you can make a ton in sales if you are good. I dont think i personally could handle the lack of structure tho lol

p.s. it was someone else that was talking about it looking bad if you leave after only 3 mon so i think that was what i was referring to

Sales are great IF you have the personality and IF you have a market for it. I couldn't give up my steady pay for a possible great week after a few possible bad weeks.

agree cpamommy. my only point was there are options. i am in no way saying the work yourself to death for the partner job is the best route. I didnt even work at a big 4. I decided to go right to industry because i wanted to graduate in 3 years (still got my 150 due to cramming extra classes in and some PSEO) and get married. so i went into industry and my industry years of exp wont be as good as big 4 exp. Its all a trade off. but if you put the work in early in your career you can have a better potential to increase your income substantially than working as a dental hygienist

My husband has no college degree and made $150k last year. He installs medical equipment and occasionally does some sales when he feels like it. His salary is $73.5k and he makes the rest in commission and overtime. Meanwhile, I work my butt off studying for this exam and have a masters degree for $43.5k.

KB – You need to find a new job if you have been there for 7 years, salary is less than $55K with no OT pay/banking hours, and have 2 weeks vacation. I have been at my firm for 4 yrs, make $50K, am able to bank OT for pay(base pay) or time off, sick time/401k/health insurance, and 2 weeks vacation. I usually have 6 weeks worth of banked OT by the end of tax season, which means I could take 8 weeks off during a year. I do NOT live in a high COL area either.

I have seen some firms give straight salary that is slightly higher pay with no overtime, but the also give 6 weeks vacation. Sounds to me like you are getting bent over and monkey punched.

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!

@Caesar, what if they just adjusted your hourly pay so that your hours didn't change and your pay ended up being about the same?

For me, I don't mind the fixed/variable pay since technically it's the same either way.

Would you be happier if your salary was higher and nothing about your job changed? I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I'm thinking, yes?

It's less a problem of getting paid salary vs hourly than it is how much you get paid in total (my opinion, anyway).

Personally, I'm in the camp that HOPES PUBLIC ACCOUNTING GETS WORSE AND NEW UNDERGRADUATES KNOW ABOUT THIS. Why? Well, it would reduce the supply of graduates and increase their demand, which would shift the balance of power from employer to employee (i.e. higher pay).

We shall see how it all plays out over the next few years..

I think the most discontent people are those who had a misconception about what life would be like in the field. I wish there was more transparency in the recruiting process and that career centers were flat out honest with students.

I don't mind working a lot of hours, but none of us ever work this 90-100 hours stuff you guys are talking about.

We have a pretty laid back firm here, we work a lot of hours in tax season and then the off season we can pretty much work when we want as long as we get our duties done. It all evens out to me. But I know a lot of people are in different situations.
