AnonymousInactiveOr have some sort of actual weekly limit in terms of hours. Not only in accounting/finance, but in so many fields employers simply hire one individual for two jobs. Does anyone else feel this way? It’s pathetic when I work until 1 am some nights for no overtime. I feel like I’m being used.

Study MonkMemberI am not sure that 15 years of 100 hour work weeks is worth becoming a partner for most people. 15 years at 70 hours a week sounds more reasonable.
I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:
"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

AnonymousInactiveSo pretty much the message is:
kill your personal life/put your health at stake for the hope of making more money….
that is the dumbest thing I have heard.
You guys make it sound like working insane hours, the immense stress associated with the job, not having quality time with your loved ones, etc… is worth the money? We work to ultimately provide for ourselves…and to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
I have a prediction…. when you are older, maybe a little wiser, you will look back and feel like the time spent with loved ones (spending time with your kids), enjoying life (actually having weekends off), is worth more than some extra money.
“Man surprised me most about humanity.Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

nope not at all. the message is if you want to make in the top %1 of accounting/tax/audit professionals you are going to have to work in the top 1%.if you dont want to work that much you dont have to but you wont be paid as if you were. if you take a jop that is paying you 100k dont expect to work the same as someone being paid 40K.
everything is a balance and its about realizing where you are in that balance when you take a job (as much as you can tell). ….most people will settle somewhere in between…working 50-60hrs and making 60-80….which is not too shabby if you ask me.

MustPass1988MemberWow. I think it's kind of amusing how bent out of shape people are getting over this post. The point of this post is that working 65+ hours per week while being salaried is kind of ridiculous. It's only beneficial for the firms, which is a major reason why public accounting has one of the highest turnover rates of any industry. Also, I beg to differ about accountants getting paid the most. Yeah, our starting salary is pretty high compared to most other grads but after that, you're really not being compensated that well for the level of responsibility you have. Sales is the best industry to be in if you want to talk about getting paid the best and having the best benefits.
As for attacking the person who equated being salaried to slavery…chill out people.

AnonymousInactiveI didn't read all the comments, but I LOVE my salaried job. I average 40-50 per week with maybe 50-60 each month end and have only had to go up to 60-70 when we have been down an employee. The plus side is the flexibility that comes with being salary. If I need to leave for an appointment my pay isn't docked. If I come back from lunch late my pay isn't docked. If I come in late or have to leave early for any reason my pay isn't docked. I know a lot of that is because my boss is awesome, but I make good money and do not typically work more than 40 hours in a week, with the exception of the above circumstances. Obviously if something needs to be done that requires extra time, salaried employees are expected to do it first because we don't make OT pay, but it's still a good position to be in. I think this thread should be more about the line of work you are in or the company you work for instead of for “salaried” positions in general.

KBinMNMembertaxman I think you jumped to conclusions about me. I've been at my firm for 7 years. Not 3 months. I'm not entry level.
An intern here left for a gov't job and made MORE money there. Better benefits too. And 40 hours/week.
And I've met people who make 60k and work 40hrs/week. A few of them are dental hygienists. Some of them are in trades and though they might work more than 40 hours they get OT pay. Which goes back to the point of this thread.
I have a few friends in sales also and they make nearly double what I do. Again no college degree, no (difficult) tests.

taxman89Participantsorry wasnt trying to make any directed statement just general ones. if you can make more in gov work than you are at your job you should look to switch industry jobs because you are prolly below market (maybe?).
i would agree that you can make a ton in sales if you are good. I dont think i personally could handle the lack of structure tho lol
p.s. it was someone else that was talking about it looking bad if you leave after only 3 mon so i think that was what i was referring to
