    Hi guys,

I’d like to know if anyone else has done the same. I recently joined a company and quickly realized this job was not for me. The hours & and the workload are the issues. I’ve had to work saturdays just to catch up and i have barely anytime for myself. I do not want to endure this much longer and would rather look for another job. I resigned this past friday and have felt embarrassed for joining and quitting so fast. I have consulted with my family and friends and they said to not worry so much about the company because ultimately, I should do what makes me happy. I’ve never felt this way about a job and so I think i made the right decision. Has anyone else left a job very shortly after joining?

I'm just curious, was this a public accounting job and/or first accounting job?

Sounds like you got into public. I know people that left after a month and they have a great career now to where they moved to. Listen to the advice given. Do what makes you happy.

But it ain't how hard you're hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

I don't recommend leaving a job until you've found another one but what's done is done. Your family and friends are correct that you should do what makes you happy but the early stages of any position are wrought with growing pains and not necessarily indicative of your feelings towards a job once you're fully immersed.

I suggest you give some very serious thought to your expectations of a job and ask more questions before accepting an offer. Yes the first few months of any job are likely to be overwhelming, yes there is a certain learning curve usually that requires you to put in lots of hours but eventually its not as intense, and yes people with professional jobs often feel like they have very little time for themselves. I started a new job 3 weeks ago and have been working since 7am today on a Saturday. It is my first month end with this company so I expect that what takes me 80 hours to complete this month will take me 60-70 next month and ultimately 40 after I've been through 6 or so month ends. Its fine because the hours I'm putting in to be very detailed and thorough now will make my life easier as time goes by.

It happens. Sometimes things just don't work out. leaving within 60 days, so long as it is done right, usually won't create any problems or get you blacklisted. Companies realize that not everyone is going to be a good fit and sometimes the only way to find out is to put in a couple of weeks to see what the place is really like. It's not even a matter of “learning a lesson.” Sometimes things just don't work out.

I wouldn't feel bad about leaving. Just make sure it was on good terms.

I gave them my two week notice. I will be more prepared when choosing jobs in the future. I apologized and said it wasn't working out for me. Thank you all for your comments. This is the first time when I knew the job wasn't for me.

You didn't provide a ton of detail, but from what you've said, it seems like you handled your resignation professionally and parted ways. Seems like you made the best of a bad situation.

Like others said, hopefully you do a better job of evaluating good fit for the next one.

    Good luck.

I hate to tell you this, but that's how almost all public accounting jobs are. I've been working 55 hours since the beginning of the year, and my work load is scheduled to increase to 70 billable hours per week until 4/15.

Even many private jobs require you to work Saturdays here and there, accounting or otherwise. I'm curious what to hear what your expectations were.

I actually made the jump back into public accounting because of the higher pay. I did 2 years in public a few years ago and jumped into private. This new job offered me a salary I couldn't refuse. Or so I thought. I have worked saturdays before, so I know how it goes. It was a mistake on my end for jumping into a job solely based on salary. At this time in my life, I'd appreciate a little more flexibility as I have a family to take care for. Thanks for your feedback guys.

Quitting a job after a month just never seems like the right thing to do, IMHO. My month anniversary at my new job was two days ago and I just don't think anyone can gather enough information about the job in that short of a time. I came on in the heart of busy season and I have “worked” one Saturday and telecommuted for a few hours on the other Saturdays from my couch. Sure, the hours have been longer than a typical 9-5, but it is actually a lot more manageable than I expected.

I hope it works out for you but I would have toughed it out for at least a year and then departed gracefully, with an offer in hand. Good luck!

I once quit a job after two hours of working there.

The first hour was training and the second hour was spent on the telephone trying to get people to join the BMG CD Music Club. I guess I can say that I gave telemarketing a chance….but for me was the worst job ever!!!

I remember the minute I quit…went up to the supervisor and said “I am sorry, but I do not want to do this” and walked out.

@rugger that's pretty funny. A co-worker at my old job quit our job on Friday, started his new job the following Monday, and was back in the original building begging for his old job back by 1:00pm the next day. The new job actually paid him for a whole day so he donated the money!
