Leaving Advisory Role After Less than a Year

    Hi All,

Just wanted to see how bad this would look to future employers and gain some perspective.

I have currently been in an advisory role for a mid-tier firm performing mostly risk assurance and internal audit type work. This is absolutely not the work I’m interested in, and the exit opportunities of being an internal auditor/business process consultant/IT auditor make me want to gag.

Is is career suicide to jump ship before the one year mark? I would be leaving for another smaller CPA firm, but in a different practice (FVS) since this area seems far more interesting to me. Also, I’d still be able to get my CPA requirements met at the new firm.

    Any thoughts?

It has been my experience that no matter what the circumstances, it is not worth it to stay doing something you hate. Employers understand that sometimes you end up in a position that didn't fit. Just make sure where you jump to is something you can stick with for a while, and then, if you want, you can drop your first employment experience off of your resume going forward.

I don't think it would look bad if you leave the current position to take a FVS position that you accepted while employed. If you leave, then look for a jot.tb it would probably put you at a disadvantage.

Like Can't Pass Again said, you can omit that from your resume in the future. Another strategy would be to just put the calender year on your resume. There is no need to put the months on there. If you move on to a third job, you could easily explain that risk was a mean to an end (FVS).

Good luck with your FVS job search- I do FVS and love it. Started out doing compliance audits. I'd rather hit myself in the head with a hammer than ever do compliance again. They both have the same mind numbing effect.

I have to ask- do you surf the west or the right coast? NJ surfer for life here. I love paddling out in the big and empty winter barrels.

Thanks for the advice, I am in a similar position currently doing compliance audits and it is really taking it's toll on my soul.

As far as where I surf, I'm a West Coast guy here. I'm in the SoCal area, so anywhere from LA to SD I have surfed.

I have a friend who lives in NY who's just now starting to surf over in Long Island. Not sure where since I've never surfed the east coast, but I'm jealous of your empty winter barrels! The cold water and weather I could do without but empty barrels is a good tradeoff.

Also, what kind of work do you do in FVS? Is it a small firm, large firm? What is a typical day like for you?
