    Hello everyone,

I am currently working full time at a company where there is absolutely no chance of advancement. I don’t like the job at all. I recently was introduced to a temporary 6 month position with a Big 4 company.

I am afraid to let go of the permanent job as its been really difficult finding a job. I have been applying for months with no luck thus far. Leaving this full time position would also mean that I will lose my steady stream of income.

I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help answer for me.

Would you guys take this temporary position? I know that it will look great on my resume but what if I can’t find a full time position after the term is up… won’t the future employers question me about the gap in my resume?

Edit: this is Big 4 position is in the finance field.

I would appreciate your help with this.

    Thanks

I would definitely take the 6 month big 4 position to get your foot in the door. Other firms will draw interest in you after you have a busy season of experience. Private accounting position is not that difficult to find. By the way, how did you find this 6 month temporary position? I am looking to get my foot in the door at any firm. Thanks.

There was another thread recently where someone asked the same question. Since you have been having a hard time finding a job I would not quit a full time position for a temp position. I work at a big 4 and we have temps. Being a temp does not get you a full time job. They use you for those 6 months and the discard you. Just because you have experienc doc a busy season does not guarantee you a job. I have 2.5 years of big 4 experience and in the last 6 months I have been on multiples interviews only to just now get a job. Unless you are ok with being unemployed for a while I would not take the temp job.

I wouldn't take it unless you have very good reason to believe it may go longer. Big 4 is a hot commodity to have on your resume but I'm not convinced that 6 months of it is a long enough stint to be impressive on a resume especially if it is followed by a period of unemployment.

6 months is not long enough to build your resume. You probably need 12-18 months MINIMUM to really say you worked there and have enough to pad a resume.

They hire temps for 3-6 months at a time in order to avoid a full time person for a whole year. The intent is NOT to hire all the temps full time. Perhaps if one is exceptional and really is a great fit, they may extend an offer, but that's not the intended purpose of a temp program. Interns are expected to be hired. Temps are just cheaper than full time hires and also more productive than interns (usually stay longer).

It's a risk you'll have to judge, and a number of factors could make it more or less attractive. If you have a really horrible job that pays poorly, doesn't give you much quality experience, and you hate your supervisor/group, then go for the temp job since you don't have anything to lose. However, if you think you could score a full time position at another public firm within the next year, then I would hold out.

To really paint a clear picture: Not many firms are looking specifically for a former Big 4 temp.

I have seen them posted on indeed.com. I don't know if it's just my area but they have seasonal assurance and tax positions open.
