    hey guys,

I did an unpaid internship last summer going into my senior year.

It was a financial advisory internship at Foresters Financial Services. Will this really benefit me at all to put this on my resume when looking for accounting jobs?

I hope it does because I see that the big4 have financial advisor departments for example but ive heard some people call financial advisors “glorified salesmen”, etc.

You need to stop focusing so much on the negatives. An internship is better than no internship at all. Surely you learned something that you can apply to whatever role you get next. I am not sure where you got that Big 4 think of financial advisors as glorified salesmen. I know a handful of people that I worked with at the Big 4 that internships in financial services and some actually worked in financial services prior to coming to audit.

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

If all you think about are negatives that may or may not be perceived by other people, then your internship was a waste of time. Agreed with the other poster – at least you have an internship. Not only think about what you learned, but also what you accomplished. Connect the dots – think how what you did relates to where you want to go. Think about how your internship made you like or not like certain aspects of accounting, audit, consulting or whatever industry you want to be in. I had a year internship being a book keeper at a motorcycle dealership. It wasn't a flashy job with a big company, but I got to do JE's for every stage of the accounting cycle. I worked with A/R, A/P, and did title work, which introduced me to filling out forms and official documents. I worked with financial statements. It gave me a great foundation. When I started in tax, my J/E skills were miles above many of the people I worked with. My point is there are skills that you learned that others without internships won't have.

    Absolutely.

I did an internship in Fund accounting and leveraged that experience to get a job at Big 4 in TAX.

You can leverage any experience if you understand the underlying soft skills will transfer. I learned a lot of soft skills doing Fund accounting, and they all transferred to Big 4. Almost none of the technical stuff did, except Excel. Excel always helps.

    Best of luck to you!

ANY experience is better than no experience. ANY internship is better than no internship. However, do not go into future interviews and speak about the experience in a negative way as you did here. Tell them you were thrilled to do it because it was something you were interested in and that you learned a lot. You have to be honest but with a positive spin.
