Has anyone ever heard of an Audit Recovery job? I got a callback for a job where I’d have to move east. From looking at Glassdoor.com, it pays like 47K which is about 15K more than I make. Apparently they do auditing for other health companies (doctor’s offices, hospitals, etc).

Good start out job? I’ve worked 2 years at a construction company doing accounting and I wanted to get into an auditing career.

The only positive of my job now is that I have a lot of time to study and it’s generally stress free

You should do a Google search for that position. This is not an accounting position but more like a position suited to those who have a medical background(i.e. nurses). This is what I found when I searched and it is from a hospital:

“The focus of the position is to work in tandem with the RAC Coordinator and serve as the backup for the Coordinator. Common duties include processing correspondence related to Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) and Medicaid Integrity Program (MIP) Activities. The RAC Specialist position provides support to the RAC Coordinator for data tracking, entry and transmission to ensure effective management of the RAC response process for all payers for the Northern California Network; involved in processing the appeals of the adverse RAC determinations as well as the clinical responses provided by hospital; assists in tracking and measuring the effectiveness of hospital’s responses.”

Google is your friend. Get used to using it for everything.

Well it's recovery audit for payments to health companies…so maybe it's a mix of both? In any case, you're saying it's not great to start out in? I've been endlessly searching for a CPA firm and I don't even have that bad of a resume.

Did you look into your state Auditor General's office? They audit government agencies but it's still audit.

First thought: If you're moving East, then likely 15k more in wages will result in a lower standard of living, since the East is generally more expensive, if you're coming from the middle of the country. (More specifically, the coasts are more expensive, so if you're moving closer to a coast, cost of living is probably going up.)

Second thought: If the work sounded interesting and like something you would enjoy, and the pay is truly going to be better (aka after COL adjustments), then be more concerned with those factors and less with things like what people here think of it. You should have been able to get a feel in your interview(s) for what the work entails. Titles are used differently everywhere. It sounds from Google like this would be less of a financial auditing job and more of an operational/program auditing job, but that may be more your cup o' tea, and that's OK if it is.

    @ Lilla

It did occur to me that this would be more of an operational/program job but it is still not “accounting” in the sense that the OP would not utilize GAAP standards. I don't think he/she would like that position. They aren't wasting money and time studying for the CPA exam to do non-accounting work. The fun lies in applying GAAP practices and building your career on that.

And as one of those “people on here who thinks of it,” I'm just trying to help him. I've been in this field for nearly 15 years and I operate my own public accounting practice(non-attest of course), I just felt I could contribute.

I do apologize to the OP if my tone was a bit harsh though.

@fsu I didn't mean that your comments were in any way inappropriate; they were answering what he asked, which was for the opinions of people on here. So, you were completely fine to answer as you did. My advice to him, though, was to see if it was what he wanted to do and base his decision off that, rather than basing it off what people here may tell him. He knows what this specific job is from having talked to them (or should by this point in the process), and he knows himself and what he does or doesn't like…so, his best bet is to analyze it himself, or maybe with the advice of some trusted advisors IRL.

From what you've stated, it seems like a job that doesn't have anything to do with financial audit, controls, financial reporting, tax, or anything even remotely related to accounting or finance. Unless you want to leave the field, I can't recommend doing that since I don't think it would be easy to use that as a stepping stone to a financial analyst, tax analyst, accountant, external/internal audit, or another CPA-related role.

I don't know how 32k compares in your metro area, but most mid sized or larger (250k+ residents) areas would be very difficult to imagine CPA-track people getting paid under 45k for a full time job. I'd stay on the lookout if I were you for more relevant work. Have you thought about what type of things you have interest in the next 5 years of your career?

I actually didn't realize it didn't have anything to do with financial, accounting audit until I googled it more after this question. I have a friend in my area, still in college, took an internship at a regional accounting firm making more than me. I don't know what else to do, I emphasize to the companies on my resume and cover letter I'm a CPA candidate, but no bites. Even showing that I passed FAR. I don't know what else to do and I get paid terribly where I'm at. I live in central pa. So a decent sized city. I need a stepping stone job but I can't find one

On top of that, I feel like I'm on the “slow path” to being in a CPA firm. I didn't get a job at the big 4 coming out of college like some of my friends. And it seems like they only hire people out of college. I'm almost 25 and am worried I have no hope! I would hope after getting my CPA more doors will open
