I will give little bit of previous work experience. I have worked with an accountant (NOT CPA) for about 7 years when I was going to school for Business Admin degree. Last year I completed my education requirements to sit for CPA exam. I have decided for a career change back into Accounting now. Now, for last 10 years I have no experience in accounting so I am relying on my previous experience.

I have applied for an accounting position within my company (I work for credit union). I requested job shadow and I think they are not interviewing until end of this month or so. I am trying to figure what target questions should I be asking beside day-to-day activities during my job shadow?

I used to work with credit unions too, I'd actually love to work in one sometime. Most of the peopl I knew in credit unions were in internal audit or compliance. My career path was actually to become a credit union internal auditor but I got into another industry almost by accident and I'm enjoying it. I never knew more than a couple CPAs who worked in credit unions. I knew one guy who was an accounting instructor at a community college, and he managed the compliance department – he might've been a JD too. But, the CPA was definitely not required for his job, he did accounting before he shifted to the compliance/legal side. Let me ask, are you going for a career in internal audit or are you staying on the purely financial side?

Anyhow, I don't know what questions you should ask but if you're working with a CPA, ask them if the CPA has gotten them farther or allowed them to do certain things than if they'd never gotten it.
You might also ask what additional responsibilities you might have, as a CPA, over someone else who didn't have the CPA and “what things I'd need to be able to do” or “what things I'd need to be good at in order to do well in the job.”

@crazyleon, thanks!! These are some good pointers. I'm basically going into financial side.

Best of wishes! Financial department of a credit union sounds like it would be a fun place to work. I'd actually be interested in such a job in the future.
