Hello. I am 40 w/a B.S. in stats. I am looking for a career change. I would need to take x amount of accounting and business course before being eligible to sit for the CPA. That’s not a problem with me. What I would like to know is what to expect on the job front, after passing the CPA (specifically in CA).

I have a few younger friends who have graduated from (very reputable) law schools and have been striking out left and right when it comes to finding work. I was wondering if the same held true in the CPA sector.

Any advice or comments would be most appreciated.

Thank you and good luck to all,

    James

Overall CPAs are highly in demand in California. Where you get your experience will play a huge part in your marketability, ie: getting your experience as an accounting clerk at a company vs. getting your experience in public accounting (Big4 even better). Think of public accounting as experience on steroids. 2-3 years in public and you're easily eligible for a Sr Accountant roll, 5-7 years in public (make manager) and you're likely an accounting Manager or Controller in the world outside of public. Although you'll be older than 99% of your peers, if you can suck it up and don't mind taking orders from a 24yr old its a great way to accelerate your new career.
