Well I guess I just wanted some opinions on a job offer I received. I recently passed all four sections of the CPA exam and am finishing up a MAcc, I have been looking into large regional accounting firms, but in the process of interviewing I was offered a $60k+ job at a start-up doing non-accounting work (so I will not be able to get the CPA credential). I had an offer last year at a large regional for $45k that I declined since I was still working on the exam and wanted to finish up school.

So I guess the question is what would you do?

Thanks for the responses everyone…I started at the start-up, and I have to say it is very exciting. I will keep my options open and attend an accounting career fair at my univeristy to see what the firms have to offer.

Its been 8 months and I wanted to follow up with everyone….All I can say is WOW!!! the fastest 8 months of my life so far. I am still working at the start up, except now I refer to it as an early stage company. We have 16 employees at this point and I am going for one hell of a ride. My position is that of a leader on the operational side, so I get to perform some limited cost accounting and we use a relatively large CPA firm for the heavy lifting.

Got a 10% raise after 4 months, and was able to bring our product shipments from absolute zero up to $250,000 / month and we just received a large contract for $675,000 per month….pretty steep ramp.

My advice for those out there…Work your ass off, look for the opportunities, and strike while the iron is hot. Also try to have depth and breadth (multidisciplinary).
