Job offer advice– Help!

    Hi friends!

I hope studying is treating you all well (I’m wrapping up AUD prep myself, so I’m right there with you). I have a question about two job offers I received, and I need advice evaluating from those who may have experience with these companies.

Both are senior consultant jobs in NYC, both focusing on advisory practices (anti-money laundering in particular). The offers are similar so it’s going to come down to which company is a better move for me career-wise. The companies in question are Deloitte and Protiviti.

Anyone have any insight on what it’s like to work for these companies? I’m coming from the financial services industry in an internal audit capacity, if that’s helpful. I’m mainly interested in variety of projects, how difficult it is in practice to rise through the ranks, and overall work environment.

Thanks, and good luck to all who are studying!

The company I work for uses Protiviti to do our internal audits. I have asked a few of the auditors about the job since I hate my job and I ask every single person I meet about their job.

None of the auditors had anything positive to say about Protiviti and all discouraged me from seeking employement there.

Both companies are going to be very similiar in terms of corporate environment and structure. I'd look at the local offices that you will be working in specifically. Does the Deloitte NYC office have 100 employees and the local protiviti office has 50? Does the Deloitte local office serve alot more out of town clients compared to the protiviti office? Who are the clients for that office compared to the protiviti one? Does that Deloitte office serve more clients in a certain industry than the protiviti office?

Wish I had to choose between those two 😉

Deloitte's NYC office is also the global headquarters.

    Thanks for the replies!

@pink– can you be more specific? What kind of bad things did they say?

@cal– all good points to consider. Both offices are rather large (but as 75 said, NYC is Deloitte's global HQ), but the practice I'm entering is small for both. Each one has maybe a few hundred people globally. AML is pretty niche. Both serve a lot of out-of-town clients, and based on the subject matter both are very much in financial services industry-wise. I asked a lot about what projects they've been working on in interviews, and both companies sounded like they had diverse options. I talked to a senior associate at Deloitte's practice, and he said he hasn't really had to travel much in the last year, and that many of his projects are local. From what they tell me, NYC isn't as much travel (but still a fair amount) as some of the regional offices.

All things considered, they're pretty equal without inside intel.

@75– I am extremely lucky and happened to have a specialized skillset at the right time. I wouldn't have made it with either of these companies if I were right out of school.

What kind of position is it? Audit? Consulting? If its audit, then definately go with Deloitte because its a Big 4 public accounting firm, and that public accounting audit experience is very valuable on a resume. I dont know if Protiviti does audit services, but they arent a licensed public accounting firm (at least i dont think they are), so whatever “audit” services they do provide are not the same as the what Deloitte is registered to do.

If its a consulting position, then its kind of a toss up. I always thought Protiviti was more specialized in consulting businesses on technology issues or restructuring? So maybe if thats what you like, the go for Protiviti, and if you wanted to do a more varied range of consulting services, then go with Deloitte.
