I’m filling out a job application and it wants 3 work references (and they are required fields, can’t leave them blank). I put one down, which is actually my supervisor from my work study job at college. I have two more people that would give me good references, but they’re at my current job and I don’t think it would be a good idea to list them while I’m still employed there.

What should I do? I know at least one work colleague (in a higher position than me but not a supervisor) that would give me a good reference and keep it confidential. But I don’t know about the other.

Does it say it actually has to be a supervisor? If you're in your first “real” job, then they wouldn't expect you to have a whole handful of past supervisors lined up. Is there anyone, even a peer, that could be trusted to keep it confidential?

Just put down “available upon request” for the fields

What if they request references? I still wouldn't know who to list. I'm still employed at my first real job and they don't know I'm looking for a new job.

If they actually request references, you can just explain to them your situation and that you can provide references outside your current employer. If they are reasonable, they will understand. If they don't understand this, then would you really want to work there?

Thanks, everyone. I just typed “available upon request” in all the fields.

As a side note, if I do get one of the jobs I applied for today, do you think 60 miles is that bad of a commute until I can move? It would probably be $15,000 – $20,000 more than I make now. If I get the job, my soon to be wife (September 29) would start looking for a job in Nashville too. Then we would move. This also means that once I get my final 14 credit hours (hopefully December), I would have to get my score transferred from KY to TN and get a TN license :/
