I hate accounting and I wish I would’ve realized it sooner. I just have no passion for this industry, I got my license last year and have been working for a good company for the last few years but I loathe each day going into work and wondering what idiot’s problem I’m going to fix because they don’t know their debits and credits. Does anyone else have this type of regret? I knew I should’ve majored in underwater basket-weaving.

I beg to differ with comments that auditing sucks…etc. The thing is, whatever you have no passion about sucks, but someone else, like me, would die to have all the knowledge and experience I need.

Back to your question, Auditing presents a lot of exit opportunities. You just have to determine what you wanna do, now and 5,10,20 years from now. Don't let your soul die because of money. Find your passion and go for it, like a cousin of mine who's a millionaire because he decided to quit engineering and start animating.

Lol TC, I clicked this topic because I heard GOB speaking in my head, lol. So someone got it!

Good news is this is normal and you are in good shape. I started in accounting back in 2006 and grew to loath every day. I found a new setup where all of my experience was loved but I never need to do actual accounting again!

The good news is that CPAs are viewed as business and financial authorities. Doesn't matter that you really aren't a general authority because the world thinks you are! You will be inundated with job offers! Wanna run a school? A charity? Teach college? Market? I know CPAs in each of these.

    Here is what I did:

1: Think of what you want to do.

2: Accounting is involved (it is involved with everything).

    3: Take the dream job

    ALTERNATIVE:

1: Think of what you want to do.

2: Accounting is not involved but BUSINESS is

3: Take the dream job (but make slightly less)

I wanted to post an Arrested Development meme with Gob. No JPG posting available here. It would have been so money.

Glad a few other people have great taste though!

I've said the same thing myself. I started off in audit and knew it wasn't for me. I was lucky enough to fall into forensic accounting and currently work for a firm that specializes in business valuation, litigation and marital dissolution. Much more exciting and not traditional accounting work.

    FAR - 58/72/75
    AUD - 80
    BEC - 71/78
    REG - 80

Ditto on the comments saying to find something else within accounting or even general business – even switching to private corporate accounting or from one type of company to another makes a big difference. I have been in corporate financial accounting from the beginning of my career and each job has been a totally different feel. I went from a billable firm to a tech company (that one was fun :)) to a biotech. Each one presents new challenges and breathes life into your career. And, as someone stated, once you are a CPA with good experience you can really manage or start any type of business. Not to mention all of the different opportunities within accounting. I've discovered I love migrating and designing accounting/ERP systems so I may move down that route.
