long story short, i “found” myself in the mid-20s, and now two years after graduating from college, i regret majoring in accounting. i can’t go back to college. i have other responsibilities now. so, can there be an outgoing and creative accountant? i find CPA (audit) so boring now and can’t concentrate well. god, i really hope there are fun things to work on in accounting firms.

yesterday i was at a cpa networking event. i observed many things i hadn’t in the past. A LOT of students were stiff, rigid, closed-off, emotionless….while i was laughing, asking questions, talkative….i have a feeling that accounting firms like to hire the former type of students. most of my classmates who got placements with the big 4 or medium 10 are prime examples of this.

i’ll give you guys an example about my thinking. so yesterday at the cpa event, when i arrived, the registration table guys forgot to create a name tag for me. the other 250 students already received a name tag each. so i took a blank sticky paper and wrote down: “I’m Manuelo and I’m awesome!” and stuck it to my shirt. i see nothing wrong with this. i’m being myself. and of course, i got a few laughs from the reps.

another example: after about 10 minutes of introduction, the event was followed by a panel discussion on stage consisting of 4 reps and a host. at the end, the host asked us students if we had any questions to ask the reps. now, i’m looking for a firm that encourages employees to think outside the box, be creative, etc. so i raised my hand, went on stage, and in front of all the 250 students, asked the reps why the earth is round. i got no answer. blank stares. complete awkwardness. you could tell the reps were wondering “why is he asking this?” no big deal, i had a reason, i was comfortable with what i did because that’s who i am.

i’ve changed drastically over the past 2 years. now i’m wondering if there is such a thing as an accountant who has similar personality as mine. i hope you guys understand what i’m trying to say. i want to finish my cpa designation, but i don’t know if i want to be a cpa forever. i used to like accounting in college, but now i don’t understand why i have to study all the rules when i’m starting to act against the rules.

I knew it was the same guy.

Heres the thing Manuelo, outgoing and creative is perfectly acceptable in accounting. But there's a line. Knowing how to dance up to the line without crossing over into childish and improper is an art form.

Hey guys, a little update….a mid-size recruiter who was at the event traced me through a list of attendees and thought of keeping in touch with me, so she added me on Linkedin. She said I stood out and she wants to see me at future events. I have a feeling she likes weird people. Cuz I never expected this.

BTW, it's common practice in Spain to have a nap in the afternoon, there was an intern at my husband workplace who was from Spain and he was so use to napping in the afternoon that he was literally falling asleep in the afternoons while working. They work in the wine industry, processing the wine indoors.

Today at work right after lunch, I was wishing that I lived in Spain and could take a siesta!

@Jennifer I'm right there with you on wishing I could take a nap from time to time at work…it would really help!

When I first started working at my firm, we had an older gentleman CPA on staff (approx. mid 70's) and was still very sharp and serviced most of the elderly clients at that time. He had been with the firm for 30+ years and was a great guy! Everyday at noon he would shut his door, eat his lunch, SLEEP at his desk (you could seriously hear him snoring), and at 1 o'clock on the dot his door would open and he would be refreshed and ready to work! I don't know if he had an alarm clock or what but he was NEVER late and apparently had been doing this for his entire 30+ years with the firm!!!!

The funny thing always was that everyone was always very respectful of his schedule…the secretary would never book him a 12:30 interview, we held or took his calls if any clients called from 12-1 for him, and we were all very quiet around his office. The owner and office manager made it clear to everyone that the only time it was acceptable to disturb this man from 12-1 was if the building was on fire! He passed away a few years ago and while he had “retired” from our firm before he died, apparently he was still preparing 1040's for his friends and neighbors literally until he passed away!

Maybe he lived so long and stayed sharp because he took naps everyday for all those years!!!!!! 😉
